So.
I’ve been thinking about this old blog of mine and what to write about, how to get more readers, how to get more writers, and how to add more content that people actually want to read, and I’ve decided the time is right to talk about my life.
I know, I know. I already talk about my life. My publisher life, my lover of books-life, and my school-visitor and former media specialist life, and my writer life.
But I’m going to start talking about my other life – my life as mama, as co-owner of my family’s business, as household manager/homemaker/hausfrau, and as gardener/chicken caretaker and potential goat owner.
One reason for this is that I spend the majority of my time doing the latter, as opposed to the former. I quit my Day Job to focus on the latter (and a little bit on the former). And I want to recognize that the mom/household manager/chicken-caretaker parts of my life give me more pleasure than most of the rest of my life. I want to own it. I’m a homemaker and proud of it!
Part of this is spurred by my soon-to-be contributions to the wonderful blog, A Mom’s View of ADHD. I feel honored to be asked to contribute to this collective effort, begun by Penny Williams. In it I’ll be writing about my life parenting my son, LittleJ, last seen (publicly) in the Russian Adoption blog on adoption.com. I had to quit writing that blog because of full-time work, but quitting it was also somewhat of a relief because right about the time I started to work full-time my son’s behavioral/medical/emotional issues became more and more problematic. Part of that was his age, part was me working full-time, and part was a mystery. In any case, we had a couple of very rough years and it was honestly too painful for me to write much about it. Last year, up until about May, was a particularly hard year.
But wonders never cease and things have improved. A ton. Thanks to new, appropriate medications, a change in classroom, and mama quitting the Day Job our lives have had a massive turnaround for the better. Add to that a LittleJ who is growing up and whose parents understand him better – well, let’s just say I’ve begun to see the humor in life again.
Anyhoo, here’s what’s happening:
- I’ll be contributing to the aforementioned blog. My first post will be Thursday and I’ll be introducing myself, then next I will talk about classroom modifications for kids with ADHD and what’s worked for LittleJ. He’s had 2.1 years of traditional public school and attended 2 preschools for a total of 5.1 years getting educated, and 3.75 of those years have been fantastic. But 1.35 have stunk up the joint. I’ll save that for another day.
- My small press’s anthology about parenting kids with ADHD and other behavioral/emotional problems is coming along nicely, all thanks to Kay Marner, the co-editor/managing editor/person who’s really in charge. She has done a superlative job soliciting essays, working with authors, and getting Dr. Edward Hallowell (!!!!!) to write the introduction.
- I am thinking about getting goats. Dairy goats. My children drink 1.5 gallons of milk a day and not only am I hoping it will make financial sense for us to get some goats, but it’ll help us be more sustainable. I’m all about growing/making/doing for ourselves these days. Stay tuned for the goat thing.
- I’ve been putting a lot of blog time in the Home Performance NC
