This post by Nikki Grimes as to why she charges for school visits (and why she’s annoyed by people who assume she’ll spend her time talking about her craft for free) is perfect. Although she and I are not in the same category as writers (I can only hope that one day I’ve brought my craft near her level – not to mention my publishing cred), I find it fascinating that someone of her caliber and level of fame is still asked to visit schools for free.
I know that schools are facing hard times, but people – there are grants and PTAs and all sorts of ways to pay for school visits!
