It’s Vacation Time around the office lately, especially now that ALA is over. But one of the delights of being offline is getting to catch up once you’re back online: it’s always fun to see that the electronic world has continued to spin even in your absence. Here are some of the posts I’ve read and loved since being back in the office:
- From Abby the Librarian: first, I loved her discussion of summer reading clubs – she’s had a phenomenal turn-out for hers…further evidence that libraries and librarians provide vital and popular services. I also enjoyed her post on ALA’s Emerging Leaders program. I was an ALA Emerging Leader (Class of 2008) and agree with everything Abby had to say – it really is a great program and I encourage librarians who meet the qualifications to apply (you still have a little time left – the deadline is August 1st!).
- Jenny Brown (of Shelf Awareness fame) over at twentybyjenny wrote a lovely reflection of Kevin Henkes’ JUNONIA: “For a child, sometimes the small shifts can feel like tectonic plates realigning their world. That’s certainly the case for Alice. And with Alice as a companion, children know that if she can survive all these changes, they can, too.“
- The Reclusive Bibliophile created a booklist “if you like cooking, baking, and candy making…” Some of my favorite foodie books are on there, and I’d love to add THE KING’S TASTER by Kenneth Oppel, illustrated by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher, and just wait until you read our upcoming BLISS by Kathryn Littlewood (February 2012)!
- Jennifer Hubert Swan over at Reading Rants reviews Candace Bushnell’s SUMMER AND THE CITY, the sequel to THE CARRIE DIARIES. It’s the perfect summer beach read (both Jen’s blog and SUMMER AND THE CITY)!
- Melissa Rabey at librarian by day has a fun cover comparison post that involves Chris Crutcher’s DEADLINE, and she also posted a review of P.J. Converse’s SUBWAY GIRL.
- A lovely review of
Coming March 13, 2012!
I love how this cover combines elements from the first two, and how consistent they are throughout the series (even down to the random cat...). Also, fierce sword there, Soph! o_O As Rachel Hawkins pointed out in her reveal post, Sophie's also wearing a Hecate Hell uniform in the reflected image...does that mean she returns to the school that started it all before the series ends? I hope so! We've come full circle =)
The books in this trilogy just keep getting better, so the conclusion is sure to be killer! I am DYING to get my hands on it after the cliffhangery torture of
Demonglass.
Here are the other two covers for comparison:
What do you think? Which
Hex Hall cover is your favorite? I think mine is still

I love summertime. Summer is the season of reading everywhere: on the beach, in my Adirondack chair, on a park bench, on a blanket in the grass. In my hunt for some good summer reads, I found lots of covers that capture this season well.
Cartwheels on the beach! (Or is that a head stand?)
That Summer by Sarah Dessen (Speak; May, 2004)
Ah, the water…
Tempest Rising by Tracey Deebs (Bloomsbury; July, 2011)
(This is the Kindle Edition cover, which is cooler than the hardback cover.)
Tara Hudson Hereafter (Harper Collins: June, 2011)
Summer isn’t all about beaches and boating…

recently revealed the cover art for
Truth, the sequel to her 2011 YA dystopian debut
XVI. Check it out:
Coming January 19, 2012!
***Contails Spoilers for XVI***
Nina Oberon’s life has changed enormously in the last few months. When her mother was killed, Nina discovered the truth about her father, the leader of the Resistance. And now she sports the same Governing Council–ordered tattoo of XVI on her wrist that all sixteen-year-old girls have. The one that announces to the world that she is easy prey to predators. But Nina won’t be anyone’s stereotype. And when she joins an organization of girls working within the Resistance, she knows that they can put an end to one of the most terrifying secret programs the GC has ever conceived. Because the truth always comes out . . . and the consequences can be deadly.
I loved
XVI, so I'm really excited for
Truth! The word cut-out covers for the series really work, I think. I especially loved the first one, because the sharp angles of "XVI" looked like they were cutting into Nina -- which is a great metaphor for the book. The only thing I'm not sure about with this cover is her expression -- is she smug? Wary? It just doesn't seem quite right, considering how dark the series is. All the white kind of reminds me of the
new Uglies series covers too.
Here's the
XVI cover for comparison:
What do you think? Have you read XVI?

Beth Revis
recently revealed the paperback cover for her bestselling debut,
Across the Universe. Check it out:
Coming to paperback November 29, 2011!
A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.
Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.
Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.
Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.
Here's the hardback cover for comparison:
I love the more SciFi feel of the new cover, but I don't think it's as eye-catching and sexy as the original. I'm quite curious as to what Amy is doing with her hand on the new cover though. Really, both versions have their benefits -- but I'm a sucker for pretty colors, so I think the hardback is still my favorite.
How about you? Which cover do you prefer? Have you read the book? Which one conveys its essence better?
Coming January 3, 2012!
She fell for him in a nighttime world. But the time for dreaming is past—and the here-and-now can be just as fragile their love…
When Theia Alderson first encountered a mysterious, handsome boy in her dreams, she never imagined how finding Haden Black—and falling in love—could change her life. To save Haden, Theia sacrificed everything. And the dangerous bargain she made could have lasting repercussions.
Now Theia has returned to Serendipity Falls, and she finds herself struggling with the same deadly hungers that have tortured Haden. When students at their high school fall prey to a mysterious illness, Theia can’t help but wonder if Haden’s control is slipping—and how much longer she’ll have a grip on her own.
And still the nightmare realm of Under won’t let them go. Someone from Haden’s past is determined to destroy Theia from the inside out, starting with those closest to her, forcing Theia to choose between family and friends and a love that may have been doomed from the start…
I think this cover is really beautiful. The rose petals she's laying on, her elaborately curled hair and that gorgeous, gorgeous dress all evoke the romance of the story, while the black rose in her hand, and the contrast of the black on her dress with the red of the rose petals gives it a kind of Gothic feel. It's also a nice inversion of the first book's cover -- which had black roses and a red dress. I'm not crazy about the title though -- it just doesn't quite have that ring to it, you know?
What do you think? Does this make you want to read the series? Have you read
Falling Under? I need to! I've heard it's really good.
Here's the
Falling Under cover for comparison:

Coming February 2012!
I love this cover. The fact that Donna is facing away is mysterious and intriguing, while the blinding lights are eye-catching and let you know that she's in control. It seems as though she's finally embracing the alchemy that saved her life -- and venturing back into the Ironwood that nearly killed her. The title also piques my interest -- is it referring to Donna? Or to the nasty faery queen we met in book one?
What do you think? Does this cover make you want to read the series?
Here's the
Iron Witch cover, for comparison. I thought it was pretty eye-catching, mysterious and beautiful as well: (enlarge to see the markings on her arms)
Coming February 14, 2012!
Everything Aoife thought she knew about the world was a lie. There is no Necrovirus. And Aoife isn't going to succomb to madness because of a latent strain—she will lose her faculties because she is allergic to iron. Aoife isn't human. She is a changeling—half human and half from the land of Thorn. And time is running out for her.
When Aoife destroyed the Lovecraft engine she released the monsters from the Thorn Lands into the Iron Lands and now she must find a way to seal the gates and reverse the destruction she's ravaged on the world that's about to poison her.
I LOVE this cover. It's so dark and haunting and striking -- just like the first book's. I also really like that Aoife looks older on this cover, and more in control. You can tell time has passed and she's come a long way. She actually looks like someone I know, which is a little bizarre haha. I've been intrigued by this series since I first heard about
The Iron Thorn -- it's sitting on my bookshelf; I need to read it soon!
What do you think of the new cover? Here's the first book for comparison:
In other news....
INSURGENT!
I personally love it. It fits well with the first title, and I can totally see Tris leading a rebel army.

One of the fun things (for me) about e-publishing involves font selection.
Yes, you read that right: font selection. Crown me king of the geeks.
But think about it. Book covers are different in the digital era. They are an electronic "button" with which a reader might investigate or purchase your book. Fonts must be readable on small icons and draw in a reader's attention. They should convey a message about the book, too.
I could spend hours looking at fonts...
Unfortunately not much else would get done.

Here's the US cover for comparison:
I thought I loved the US cover, but the UK one blows it out of the water. I LOVE the new cover. I've just been staring at it in awe. Isn't it striking? There's just something so ethereal about all the white on blue. The girl appears to be in black and white, doesn't she? It's so subtle you hardly notice it, but I think that's what makes the whole cover just POP. She looks like she's from another world -- very "unearthly" (sorry, I couldn't help myself). I may order another copy of the novel just so I can have this awesomeness sitting on my shelf.
In other news, the
Unearthly ebook will be released on
April 19th!

Ally Condie recently revealed the cover for Crossed, the sequel to her bestselling novel Matched:
I cannot tell you how much I love this cover. Not only does it fit with the cover theme of the first book and match the content of the series, it is also FIERCE! Cassia is busting out! I love it and it makes me incredibly excited to read Crossed (as if I wasn't already...). Ally also mentioned in

HarperCollins has revealed the cover and title of a posthumously published Shel Silverstein poetry collection: Everything On It. The publisher will print one million copies of the September release.
Here’s more about the book: “With more than one hundred and thirty never-before-seen poems and drawings completed by the cherished American artist and selected by his family from his archives, this collection will follow in the tradition and format of his acclaimed poetry classics.”
Silverstein passed away in 1999, but his children’s poetry collections (Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic) have a dedicated audience. The poet, illustrator and songwriter hesitated to enter the children’s market until he met the legendary children’s editor Ursula Nordstrom and she convinced him to try.

The cover for This Is Not a Test is fantastically disturbing--I love it.
Omigosh this is an epic cover post, I don't even know where to begin!!
Freaking out over Bitterblue. The cover is lovely and I am dyinggggg for this book - finally!!
Ahh Girl of Nightmares, so freaky. I bet it will be gooddddd.
Timepiece = amazinggggg. (haha man, can you tell I stretch out my letters when I'm excited)
Surrender = GORGEOUS. I was not a fan of possession at all, but that cover was so cool and the hummingbird?! Oh man, amazing.
Endlessly is totally my fave cover of the trilogy. And yes, love her expression!
Loveee the Bittersweet cover and descrption. 'Twenty Boy Summer' was AMAZING, you should totally check it out.
Totally agree re: the Shine cover. I am not the biggest fan. The yellow is just kind of startling. Thankfully I am not manic about books matching, but it still kind of upsets me that my Shade and Shift covers won't look the same as Shine. Well, either way I am SO excited for the book itself.
Well. Here is an epic long comment for you to match the epic beauty of this cover post. ;)
A retelling of Rebecca! YES, please. I've read the original several times and it's always fabulously creeptastic. Also, several other I'm excited about, especially Timepiece.
These are all great covers. I love Bitterblue and Endlessly. If I Die is also fabulous! I'm going to read The Selection based on cover alone. I have to ask though, where is Meg Cabot's Underworld? I haven't seen it on any of the blogs and it's awesome! Check it out:

Awesome, right? Anyway, great post! I'm such a cover whore and I love it when someone does all the work to put it all in one place for me to ogle! Thanks!
http://yalitwit.blogspot.com
Too much pretty!!
I NEED Bitterblue like NOW! I can't wait for it.
Anyway, I love almost all of these. Endlessly is gorgeous and may be my favorite in that series. I want to live in The Selection cover. It is incredible!
I'm not a fan of the new Shade cover either. I just don't like that girl...plus the color of Shine is...just yuck.
