2. mentor makers event!

I am mentoring at the Maker Mentors conference next month!

When I was first asked to be a mentor for this event I was thrilled. But then fear and doubt started to settle in. Just between you and me I am currently looking for full time work for the first time in my 14 years as a freelance artist/illustrator. I thought, "who am I to tell someone else how to make it, when I'm possibly going back to a regular job?"  and then I nearly backed out of the event.

One phone call to Cassie (the director of Maker Mentors) had me feeling 1000% better and more excited than ever to be attending and participating in this online event.

Here's what you'll find at this event that you won't find anywhere else -  REAL LIFE stories from all of us about the rollercoaster ride that is being an artist/creative and you will learn how those of us have dealt with and overcame a variety of situations! We all work alone in our tiny little bubbles, when you look on facebook and twitter you can't tell the hurdles that another person has had to go through to make their business happen. At Mentor Makers you are going to hear it all so you can walk away armed with the stories, ideas and knowledge that you need to make your own business soar.

The conference is happening May 14th-16th. Everyone who signs up gets access to 20+ live sessions with creative business experts, an interactive forum and tons of resources to help you grow your business. Don’t worry if you can’t make it live. All of the content is recorded so you can access it anytime. I'll be there along with tons of other mentors and speakers and you won't want to miss what we have to share!

Register now with discount code “CLAUDINEHELLMUTHVIP” and get $50 off of your conference fee. Click here to find out more and to register!

11. retro car printable cupcake boxes!

I remember the first car that I bought "completely brand new" - I was 26 years old and it was a 2000 New Beetle in BRIGHT yellow. I loved this car right from the first minute I drove it off the lot.

It was so adorable, like driving around a little piece of sunshine! I even had a sunflower in the dashboard bud vase.

In 2008 when we moved to DC we sold my car and I actually cried when I said goodbye to it. My heart still flutters when I see a yellow Beetle drive by!

And just for the record I do not approve of the new redesign of the Beetle. It's not as cute and girly anymore, don't you agree?

new in the shop:

retro car cupcake and favor boxes!

Speaking of cars of adorable cuteness ..... I have created a whole fleet of retro car cupcake boxes and just added them to my shop! It took a full 6 weeks of work on this kit -- but it was worth all the effort!

I didn't make a Beetle car, instead, I put on my car designers hat and came up with my own design. I like to think of it of a mini-meets-fiat-meets-beetle and I think it came out pretty darling!

These new little car cupcake and treat box kits come with TWO removable cupcake trays - one for standard cupcakes and one for mini cupcakes. Can also be used as a cookie, candy, gift card box, party centerpiece, favor box, paper toy too!

Also, I've designed this kit so that you can customize the banner and license plates with your own text! Just open in Adobe Reader and type in the provided text boxes, easy as pie!

Perfect for so many occasions: weddings (just married car!), birthdays - sweet sixteen!, gender reveal parties, baby showers, Father's Day (didn't Dad always say he wanted a new car!) and so many more occasions!

Each car kit also comes with two mini suitcase templates that sit on top of the car for an extra retro touch. The mini suitcases can hold small treats and candies, lip gloss or other tiny gifts too!!

easy to assemble:

watch the video tutorial!

I always create a tutorial video for every kit, I like to share with you tips and tricks to put your kit together easily with no stress. Click below to watch the video!

blast from the past:

my first attempt at a 3D paper car was in 2008!

I was browsing my Flickr account the other day and stumbled across this photo taken in my studio in 2008 of my very first 3-D prototype - and guess what! it's a paper car! 6 years ago I had the idea, started it and then shelved it while I worked on other projects...now I am back full circle with finished paper cars! Love it when creative projects come back around like that!

13. I'm on the writing and creative process blog tour

My friend Beth Dryer Kingston invited me to join the "My Writing Process" blog tour! I've adjusted the questions to fit my creative process (as I'm not really a writer) and I've tagged three of my fabulously creative blogger friends - Kathy the Crafty ChicaAnn Butler and Jenipher Lynn - as the next stops on this fun tour, be sure to check out their blogs next week to learn all about their writing & creative methods!

1) What am I working on?
I'm currently working on a retro car cupcake box! It was a challenge to design it so that the lid would open to fit a cupcake in in, but after a week of template design, I got it all figured out. I'm currently at the photo editing stage and I should have it ready for my shop next week!

2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?
My OCD comes in handy here giving me a nearly obsessive attention to detail :) I love color, whimsy (and polka dots too!) and through my work I try to convey a little happy escape from the every day world!

3) Why do I create what I do?
Ever since I can remember I have loved paper. I have clear memories when I was about 6 or 7 making paper dolls with my friend from down the street - cutting images out of catalogs and drawing new outfits for our dolls.... I also loved the Whitman Punch Out Books - you could make an entire little village just by punching out paper and adding a little tape or glue. It seemed like magic that something flat could become dimensional adorable and fun to play with too!

Now 33 years later, I design printables for people to download, print and make and it still seems like magic! It is amazing to me that I can design and create something here in Washington DC, it can travel to it's new owner as digital pixels and binary bytes (sometimes as far as Dubai!), they print and cut it out, add a little tape and glue and then suddenly, they've got a cute little retro oven or ice cream truck just waiting to hold their cupcakes!

4) How does my creation process work?
I thought I'd share my creation process by sharing with you a specific kit that I made:

1) a customer asked me if I had any cotton candy themed items... which then got my wheels turning. I love cotton candy so I was excited to try out a new design! I thought about it for two days even started a couple designs that just weren't working out, then I sketched out this little drawing late at night before going to bed.
2) the next morning I was anxious to see if my idea would work so I started working on the bag/box template structure, which involves a lot of folding of paper and measuring until i get a shape I like. Once I got the template down, I put one together and sketched out my idea (very roughly!) on the side to see if it would work.
3) At this stage I am laying out the general color and making the template the correct size. Another rough sketch on top for placement, then there are many, many, (so many!) design revisions before moving on to step
4) after much gnashing of teeth and fretting over teeny tiny design tweaks the finished design is ready and finished!

Thanks again to Beth for including me in this blog tour! Kathy the Crafty Chica, Ann Buttler and Jenipher Lynn will be sharing their creative methods in the next week - I hope you will stop by and say hello!

I have exciting news! My Happy Houses printable kit is featured on the cover of Melanie Martinez debut album, Dollhouse! Here's a screen shot below, but you can get a closer look on itunes. And there's real cd's available here.

When I was first contacted by Atlantic Records, I had no idea who Melanie Martinez was (I hadn't seen her on season 3 of the Voice) but I quickly found out how much I liked her work and became and instant fan. Melanie styled and photographed the album cover herself, and I love how it all came together. It was a treat to collaborate with Melanie and have my work featured on her debut album!

17. summer reading giveaway!

I've added a few books to my summer reading list that I'd like to share with you so let's have a GIVEAWAY!

First up is this darling and touching book by Jenipher Lyn: How being Stubborn Depressed and Unpopular Saved my Life. From the title it sounds like a heavy book, but don't be hesitant to read it, Jenipher covers universal topics that we can all relate to, self comparison, not feeling good enough (can I get a hand raise?!) all with her adorable and lighthearted illustrations and lettering. It's hard not to smile while reading this book, a great read to share with a teen or tween in your life (or anybody really!) we all deal with this stuff and it's a good reminder we are not alone! I first met Jenipher on twitter and saw her sweet illustrations, and that she was writing a book and she sent me one copy to share with you in a giveaway - giveaway details at the bottom of this post! See more views of the book here or purchase in Jenipher's etsy shop!

Next in our summer reading giveaway is Maker Dad: Lunch Box Guitars, Antigravity Jars and 22 other Incredibly Cool Father Daughter Projects by Mark Frauenfelder founder of Boing Boing and editor in chief of MAKE magazine. I was contacted by Mark's publishing company to see if I'd like to do a giveaway on my blog, I thought just based on title ALONE that this sounded like a fabulous book! As a kid I loved rainy day project type books and I would have been first in line to get this one! It covers everything from making an ice cream sandwich necklace (one of my fav projects from the book!) to silkscreening shirts to making a retro video arcade game. If you have a patient and crafty Dad, this book would be a great gift for Father's Day! AND I have a copy to giveaway too - see the end of this post for details to enter the giveaway.

And last (but not least!) is Pam Carriker's book, Creating Art at the Speed of Life: 30 days of mixed media exploration. Summer is perfect to catch up on your creativity, so why not get started with Pam's book and have a new project every day for a month! (this book pairs well with my online Composition for Collage class which starts June 19!) Focusing on art journals as your base, Pam takes you through a new technique each day and by the end of the book, you will have a fabulous art journal, filled with new techniques. Pam also covers design basics like color, shading, form, line etc and has Q & A highlights with artists featured in the book: Seth Apter, Lesley Riley, Mary Beth Shaw, Susan Tuttle and many others! I have one copy to giveaway to a lucky winner! Details below on how to enter!

♥ ♥ ♥ LET'S HAVE A GIVEAWAY! ♥ ♥ ♥
PRIZES:  3 winners - 1 of the above books per winner

HOW TO ENTER: let me know in the comments below which book you are entering for!  Don't forget to include your email if you don't have a blogger profile, so that way I can contact you!

CONTEST CLOSES: Winners will be selected at random on Friday June 12th at 5pm EST and I'll notify winners by email as well as post them here.

19. how to print + cut in the Silhouette Studio V3 update

Silhouette has come out with a new and much improved update to the Version 3 software that was released a couple weeks ago.

Whew! I am so glad! I

use my cutting machine to print and cut my printable kits so I am mainly concerned with how that process works and this update is so much better.

It opens my SVG files correctly, handles layers better (still some tweaks needed but this is a big improvement), they also brought back the cut/no cut settings. It's generally more user friendly for print and cut. Yippee!

So today I filmed a little video tutorial how to set up SVG files properly to print and cut in Silhouette V3 newest update! Watch the video below or click here to watch on youtube

For fabulous tips and help with all things Silhouette (+ other cutting machines too!) check out:

Clever Someday Blog - Kay has been beta testing the new version 3 and she is such a huge help to her blog readers with trouble shooting and tips! Make sure to read this post and check back for future updates before you decide if you want to update your software or wait a little bit longer.

Scrappy Diva Karin - Karin has so many free and super helpful videos on all types cutting machines, if you are new or seasoned pro, she's got tips for you. Her info was a lifesaver when I was first starting out using my machine just 2 months ago.

Doodling Debbie - is also a Silhouette software beta tester and she has a comprehensive video on her youtube channel with all the features in the new update to Version3.

2) you can see here they even re-created my drawing from the front of my Sweet Shoppe on the cake!
3) look at how many Sweet Shoppe kits she created - 53 boxes total!
4) make sure to visit Karen's blog to see more pics - you won't want to miss the "cake" centerpieces she created from vintage jello molds and tins you can see just a peek of them in this photo!

22. silhouette studio V3 software update

Silhouette just released a new version of their software, Silhouette Studio Version 3, I'm using the Designer Edition.

There's quite a bit of internet buzz about it so I am sure more changes are coming as they get feedback from everyone who uses it.

I downloaded the software today tested it out, and filmed a quick SVG print and cut tutorial. Right now I prefer the Version 2 software to this one, but I am hoping there will be some new updates soon to correct some of the bugs. I made sure to keep Version 2 on my computer and I recommend doing that if you can, or just waiting to download the update until they make any additional changes.

If you have already updated, or just want to see what it looks like, here's a quick little video that I filmed for you:

24. spring printable kits!

I've got a few little happy and whimsical spring kits in my etsy shop to share with you

1) Just add a few Easter eggs and jelly beans to my Sweet Treat train and you have an adorable Easter/spring centerpiece! Once Easter is over you can use your Sweet Treat Train for birthday parties by adding cupcakes to the cargo cars!

2) My printable Church favor box goes perfectly with the Happy Houses kit so you can make an Easter village for your mantle! You can also use this little church for weddings or baptism parties too!

3) These little Happy House favor boxes can hold candy, favors and gift cards!

4) I created these little whimsical paper bird ornaments to be used as centerpiece decorations for Spring parties, but then while I was working on them I thought they could also be used for Weddings (how cute as a cake topper!), Baby showers (use the pink and blue for a gender reveal party!) or just to add a little whimsy to your home!

Our cat Brian, seems to think that these little birdies also make great cat toys! Here's an Instagram I took of him "helping" during my photo shoot. He decided he really loved these birds and wanted one to play with. I finally gave in and let him have one (after the photo shoot of course!) Follow me on instagram, I'm claudinehellmuth over there :)

25. paper love blog hop and a giveaway!

I'm excited to be a part of the Paper Love Blog hop!

It seemed like magic that something flat could become dimensional, and adorable and fun to play with too!

LET'S HAVE A GIVEAWAY!
