51. Too Long on the Other Side of the Looking Glass

Wow, time surely flies! I can't believe it has been so long since my last post. I have been so busy between commissions and my son starting college last week (the prices of textbooks are just mind boggling! O.o), but finally have some time to breathe.

This week I am featuring the art of Nicole West, whose works for me are pure eye candy! The detail and imagination she puts into each piece is just breathtaking. She does one of a kind polymer sculptures which she then sells on ebay. She has quite a following and when she finishes a piece it really goes fast into private collections. Her work can be found for sale on ebay by searching her name. Below are just a few samples of her beautiful works! More can be found in her Deviant Art gallery and/or her own site here.

52. And Now for Something Totally Different!!!!

I'm pretty busy working on commissions at the moment that I'm not at liberty to share for a while yet. So in the meantime I plan to do a series of blog posts about artist's whose work just wow's me! Keeping that in mind, if when reading these posts you have seen work that wow's you and would like to see it featured here, please feel free to point it out to me via your comments! Also, my strengths lie more in drawing and painting than writing, so please forgive the punctuation and grammatical errors that are sure to follow.

We've all had the experience of seeing something new and thinking "Man, why didn't I think of that!" This was the case when I happened across the wondrous works of Kristy Ilic, founder and CEO of Beetling Design. The term "Something totally different" really does apply here! She's a perfect example of an artist who had an inspired and innovative idea and ran with it! As a result, we all now have the delightful option of having lovely whimsical childrens' 3D wall decor that puts a quite literal spin on the often used designer term pops. Her company designs, manufactures and distributes unique first-of-its kind 3D wall decor for children's spaces. From bedrooms and playrooms to Doctor and Dentist waiting rooms, classrooms, libraries, daycares and pharmacies. Beetling three dimensional wall art is safe, hand crafted, easy to install (and reinstall) and because it is light weight it can be shipped world wide at low prices. Their decor is fun, fresh and alive, helping feed the imagination of children and the child in all of us. Hop over to their easy to navigate website and see just what I mean!

56. My "Baby" is Graduating O-o!

My "baby" is graduating, it seems just yesterday it was his first day of kindergarten and he was telling me I had made a big mistake. He wasn't supposed to be there! Everyone else in class is five and he was only four! (his birthday was five days later) Seriously, where does the time go? One day he's telling anyone who would listen that he's going to be an explorer when he grows up, and the next he's getting ready for his senior prom. *sigh*

So due to all the planning and whatnot, I have been neglecting my blog, and shop. Sorry, multitasking is near the top of my list of "Things to do". :)

I have since my last post joined a couple of Etsy Teams! One is the FAE Etsy Team Fantasy Artists of Etsy, and the other is the Etsy FEST Team the Florida Etsy Street Team. I was fortunate enough to have my April's Shower piece featured in the FAE Etsy Blog! I'm truly honored!

I also had my first Etsy sale!!!!! Someone who'd purchased a set of my season fairies cross stitch patterns from MistyDreamz wanted to order a set of bookmarks to match!! There was some serious happy dancing going on here, let me tell you!

(Go to page linked to image and scroll down to see my available cross stitch patterns)

I'm trying to plan a contest for the blog in the very near future, so keep a look out!

Oh yes, almost forgot! Your all time favorite movie is....? ;)

58. Can the market bear one more "fairy artist" ?

A few years ago I submitted a couple of my first pieces to Porterfield's Fine Art Licensing. The response was one of the first "positive" rejections I received (yes there have been a few ^.^). In the response from Mr. Klass the president, one of his observations was "Can the market bear one more "Fairy Artist"? He said he wasn't sure, that the market sometimes seemed pretty much cornered by the likes of Amy Brown, and Selina Finech just to name a couple. He did like my progress so far, and invited me to submit again once I had more work...a lot more. I'd like to pose this question to you all. Can the market bear one more fairy artist? Do mine stand a chance among the other works being offered out there? There are sooo many already. I do enjoy creating them, although that is not all I create. Hmmnnn...something to ponder.

I am learning more every day about Etsy and networking in general, and still having a blast doing it. As mentioned in earlier posts, I plan to pass on any good tips and sites I happen across and here is another one of those places. One Little Bird Jewlery is a blog that features great selling tips and she is quick to share the work of other sellers whose work she admires!

By the by, I am still waiting to hear what everyone's all time favorite movie is, I haven't received one answer to that yet! Wonder how many posts I'll have to mention it in until I do?
^.^

59. What a week...

Wow, what a week! For this post I am just going to let my thoughts ramble and see where they might go.

This week besides working on a commission for a character illustration for a logo, I've also been working on my etsy shop. No sales yet, but I have been receiving some hearts! And one of my prints was featured in my first treasury (as mentioned in my earlier post)! I've got to say Etsy sellers are some of the nicest people you want to meet, they are kind, positive, and helpful. I'm having a blast. Still learning, but it is such fun! I just joined Florida's Etsy Street Team (FEST) and I'm really looking forward to learning the ropes and interacting with the group.

I'm hoping to feature at least one artist's works a week and I'm starting with this post! So without further ado...

Please check out the lovely artworks on glass by V SILCOX DESIGNS on Etsy. I've always loved beautiful art glass, and hers are not only gorgeous, they're made to stand up to everyday use!!! Definitely one of my favs! Below is a lovely sample from her shop:

Another discovery I've made this week is Skimmer. If you're active on social sites such as facebook or twitter, this is a dream for helping to keep up with your own posts and the posts of those you follow! I am loving it!

I would like you to share your thoughts with me as well, on anything I post about. Whether it be something you like (or dislike) or a link you think might pertain to something in my post, sage advice, whatever! On that note, I would like to have some sort of weekly contest on my blog. Anyone doing that right now, or have in the past? Have you done it enough that you've figured out some do's and don'ts concerning them? Please let me know, I'm here to learn and share and have it be fun for all of us! And, hey, what's your favorite all time movie? Mine's "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" (I love old movies) :)

Wow! 2009 is here! And it is off to a glorious start for me! I have participated in my first interview!!! By Christa of 2D Valley.com. I am so excited and flattered! I am also working on getting items ready to post on my Etsy shop. The plan is to have the "grand opening" at the beginning of February. So all in all, I feel like I am walking on air right now, and if this is any indication of the way this year is going to be, please don't pinch me, :giggle: I don't want to wake up!
Here's to a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous New Year for us all!

64. Latest artwork

So here is my Latest artwork done mainly in Painter and Photoshop. I am trying to become more proficient in the "painting" programs. I appreciate the tips I received from the nice people from the wip forums of GFX and Epilogue. I used ps brushes designed by Falln-Stock of Deviant Art for her wings, but the rest is by me.

65. Clearwater Celebrates Jazz...

One of my works has been selected for reproduction in banner-form for Clearwater Celebrates Jazz, a temporary exhibition of artist-designed banners in the Cleveland Street District of downtown Clearwater, Florida. It was selected as one of ten that will be reproduced as banners for the exhibition. The banners will be on display in the Cleveland Street District in conjunction with the annual Clearwater Jazz Holiday and inaugural Jazz 'N Art Walk October 18th and 19th from 10AM – 5PM. If you happen to be in the area, be sure to go, promises to be a great time as usual! Needless to say, I'm thrilled!

66. Plagiarism Abounds and Astounds!

If you see this book! Don't buy it! Instead please go the this link and follow the instructions there. Plagiarism abounds, this we all are pretty well aware of. But once in a while you come across an example that literally takes your breath away. Darren Di Lieto, founder of The Little Chimp Society, a well known art blog has been a recent victim.
He has spent the last 3 years building up the site to it's current status as a great artist/illustrators advocate and resource. In a fraction of that time a publisher in Hong Kong called Great Creativity organization has plagiarized practically all of that hard work (not to mention the actual work of the artists and writers contributing to the blog), and published a book which is available online and in bookstores at the price of 42 euros!

He goes into more detail on his personal blog here, please do visit and be amazed at the audacity of this company. I know I was. And please, let's do what we can to help by spreading the word.

67. Orphan Works Bill: Fact or Fiction?

If you are an artist, can you afford not to find out? Isn't it worth the time to read, listen and learn what you can concerning it? Following are a couple of links to get you started that offer information and there are others flying all over the net at this point, since it is currently a fairly hot topic.
Link 1 and here is another link to an mp3 formatted interview with Brad Holland of the Illustrators Partnership conducted by Mark Simon.

There are already plenty of people out there saying it is all being blown out of proportion, that it really isn't about being able to get "free" art. If it were a perfect world where artworks (with perfectly legible copyright information) weren't already being ripped and the ownership info being photoshopped out, then I might tend to agree. But when was the last time the world was perfect? For my own part, I see it as a very real threat to the security of our copyrights especially the way it is currently being presented.

The sad truth is....money talks and BS walks. Always has and always will. Common sense alone should tell you that when it comes to human nature, people don't as a habit go out of their way to do anything unless there is something in it for them. So as long as there are well funded powers that be out there that want this bill to pass (and if it means making more money for them by getting more of something for nothing, they will want it to pass) don't think they won't keep trying. It always boils down to money, and if you can't see how determined they are by this second run at it, then sheep you truly are. They are counting on our apathy, and ignorance. Let's not make the mistake of making it easy for them.

68. The Big Plan....

I have finally started my blog!  My big plan for it is that there really is no big plan.  I'm learning about all things concerning the internet as I go, and will use this blog to express my thoughts about what I do, and what I think might interest or help someone else out there.  About how the internet is in a constant flux, and how it is changing the way people work, advertise, promote.  And I hope to hear from others concerning their thoughts as well.
