Beginning a new year is always so exciting aint it? Looking forward to the things to come this year. Especially looking forward to attending my first ever SCBWI winter conference here in NY this month. Weee! If you’re planning on attending this year would love to meet and greet with you since I don’t really know anyone yet.
As per every new year I needed a new face for my promo postcards. I was going to use the Heidi illustration as the new face for the cards but I decided to go another direction and create a finish out of a previous rough sketch. And being as that it is a new year, I thought I’d try new things. This illustration is a combination of both Photoshop and Corel Painter. I was going to paint the whole thing in painter but found my self going back to Photoshop. Hopefully down the line I won’t find myself so dependent on PS. Also trying new techniques that will hopefully take the work up a few notches. Here’s to a great new year!
It’ll be an interesting and kinda troubling phenomenon should there be a day where you need to wear your thickest of winter clothes in the middle of July.
Even after a hefty meaty meal such as the ones a large Filipino family gathering are known for, there’s always room for flan. I don’t know about any other Filipino household but in my family it’s not party without Tita’s (insert auntie’s nickname here)‘sFlan. And people almost always seem to be surprised when the plate of Leche Flan comes out as the echos of “OoHs” and “WaaaoooWs “hover around this little plate of goodness as if no one was expecting Tita (insert auntie’s nickname here) to come over with this dish…even if she’d been bringing Leche Flan over for like umpteenth plus years now.
Here’s a quick little illustrated instruction on how Leche Flan is generally made. I’ve personally never made Leche Flan before. And to avoid any aunties assuming I’m trying to grand stand their signature dish…I don’t think I’ll ever be attempting to make one anytime soon either. But if you have a go at it let me know!
This week’s theme on IF is Prehistoric. What better to portray that theme than with these two toothless critters from the “Love Es Strange” archives. Happy weekend!
Well it finally happened. After a really good running streak with my printer, they’ve gone and screwed something up. I just wish it wasn’t this many prints at one time. Last week I received an order for 7 art prints and all was going well until the job was sent to the printer. They not only delayed the printing back for 3 days, when I finally received them they came out too dark and dull..rage.
While I wait for a reprint (crossing fingers they don’t botch it up again) I managed to create the packaging for it despite of how upset I am about this delay. Creating the packaging for this was actually quite therapeutic and definitely calmed me down a bit. There’s nothing like the feel of kraft paper, glue and xacto knives to make things all better…ok and maybe a little rubber cement.
As soon as Capee-tan America turns his head to see the the baby in distress Batman pointed out to him…b.m pulls a fast one on old capeetan..Oh that sneaky sneaky Batman…
This is probably the closest thing I will ever get to doing any kind of fan art. I was going to do a turkey for this weeks quick sketch and color but by tomorrow afternoon (and for the next few if you’re hosting) I bet you’d probably be up to your gizzards in turkey. So instead here’s a little homage to a couple of my fave characters growing up…
Every now and then I get to work on a commission that means a whole lot more than meets the eye. I love getting to work on illos knowing that it has so much sentimental value to the recipients..ah love..es strange! Here’s a quick look at some of the progress..

Just finished the rough color this morning. I was waiting till I finished the actual piece but I wanted to update today. Hopefully I’ll wrap the final up by next week. I can’t wait to see how this turns out. Wee. Here’s to love and forest animals..HAPPY FRIDAY!

Yay. Ijust finished the final illustration for the Art Blocks for Ghana project. I decided to make a few minor changes to the final, for example the clouds don’t looks as cartoony as I initially planned them to be when I created the color comp. I wish the background were a lot smoother than it is though…but I’ve already changed it twice and I’m scared the third time would just make the whole thing look too muddy.
As you can see I was taking shots of the progress for you but unfortunately my camera ran out of battery during the process so I couldn’t document all of it…boo.

I wanted to have fun with this one so I chose to do it in a really playful style. I also chose really bright and fun colors because that’s the first thing that pops into my head when I think of Ghana or Africa in general for that matter.
I hope this little guy finds a really awesome home to live in! I hope you guys participate in the auction this coming March 2011.

A construction company asked me to create a rough sketch for them for some marketing purposes and I was more than up to the challenge…and challenging it definitely is.
I have been avoiding this type of work since 3D rendering class in high school (I had other people draw perspectives for me….for shame) and it was about time I faced that fear of doing any type of linear work.
Technical work has never been my forte (although this isn’t exactly technical..close enough) but I thought this project would be a great feat to tackle since it’s totally out of my comfort zone. So here’s a very very rough sketch of my first idea…I’m not sure this is what the client had in mind…hehe we’ll see!
I haven’t touched my paints and bushes in more or less than two years. I forget how much more patient you have to be with actual paint.
Here’s a color composition of an illustration I’m doing for Artblocks for Ghana done on a 8×8 art board with acrylics and watercolor. This is actually the second color composition I made for this piece. The first one was done digitally but I had to make sure I would be able to express those bright colors as well with paint. I gotta fix those clouds…eeeesh! I’ll post the final artwork hopefully by next week.
I actually wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to make this site live or not yet because there’s still a whole lot of stuff to do. So I’m considering this the beta version until I figure everything out. I just didn’t want to prolong it from being live anymore as I did set up a deadline for this. It’s still pretty empty, but thankfully I’ve managed to finish setting up most of the hard stuff….! Stay tuned for more updates! Until then…

Oh my.. I’ve been so busy doing backend work for the little online store this week! It gets really frustrating at times being as that I have very little knowledge of phps and tpls…etc. I’ve been up to my ears with codes and “hooking” things to…I don’t even know anymore.
But it’s FRIDAY!
And I get to unwind a little this weekend. Hope yall do too! As you can probably tell I’m totally excited that I get to be Bob Ross for a night! This was the easiest costume to put together.I already have the palette and paint brush all I needed was the hair. Sweet!

If you’re new to the blog earlier this week I decided to giveaway a copy of a skeletal sketch from one of my favorite 90’s cartoon character. And as many of you guessed it is in deed Babs Bunny from Warner Brothers Tiny Toons Adventures.
Playing with different ways of creating videos and entertaining yall so I decided that for this week’s demo I would change it up a bit and include myself in the video. I’m not sure if I should continue doing this in the future…I don’t know…we’ll see. In the meantime have fun with this one and have a good laugh at the dorky bloopers at the end of the actual demo.
P.S….my skin tone is not a bright shade of orange in real life

I thought a skeletal study/sketch of a favorite 90′s Warner Bro’s cartoon would be a great spooky post for this week…but it still seems to lean towards cute (sigh). Can you guess who it is? This is pretty easy so let’s have fun with this one. First person who guesses who this character is get’s a free 8×10 copy to add to your Halloween decor.

I decided to go up to our attic today in search of some brown kraft paper and came out with a gigantic ruler of some sort, my old books lots of ‘em! and a very pink cutting matt which is something I’d been meaning to buy so I’m pretty psyched about this find.
This very pink cutting matt probably use to belong to my mom (use to…because it’s mine now). I don’t know if many people know this about my mother but she’s quite a talented seamstress and I think she could have been in fashion had she opened her mind to that calling in her yester-years, but instead she became a teacher and makes a hobby out of her dressmaking skills…which is all fine and dandy!I’m just really glad she got past her “I’m going to make dashiki’s for everyone” phase..
Oh Yah and I totally found my copy of one of my fav books ever that I picked up during my internship at Sesame…ahh those were really good times… I’m looking forward to reading this again.If you have yet to read Stink: The Incredible Shrinking KidI totally suggest you pick it up soon, it’s a fun read for those who are just starting out with chapter books…like me…HAH!
It’s funny how in large cities where you have access to all types of transportation people would rather walk.
I had a video for this but it would take at least 2 days to go through the clips and with all the things I have to do this week I just don’t have time to sort through it. But stay tuned in the next following weeks!

Last Thursday I had a pleasure of visiting the fabulously decorated boutique of designer Michele Varian(in SoHo) for the Creative Inc. book signing event where I got to meet and greet with the wonderful authors of such a resourceful book (and might I add so well designed), Meg Mateo Ilasco and Joy Deangdeelert Cho! It was quite a turn out! It was so great to see such an overwhelming amount of people who came out to show their love and support to these two very talented and inspiring women. I wish them and this book much success!
Oh thank goodness I’m finally done with a significant part of this revamp project. If you’ve been visiting the blog and studio lately it’s undergone a slight face lift but I’m glad we’re coming close to the finish line.Now I can focus my energy on the gazillion and one other things to get done like setting up the boutique which I haven’t touched since last week because of this main site over haul.
Bah. I’m going to stop now before I bore you to death with my nerdy babble. Have fun looking around the new (old) site! Let me know if you find any problems while navigating your way around it.
This is one of the perks of living in large tech savvy city like NYC…. you get to post a picture of yourself and have the convenience of sharing your wacky mug with the rest of the world anywhere, anytime. I still think it’s flippin’ awesome that public places like Hudson River Park offers free wi-fi. It’s a great way to pass the time especially when you’ve arrived at your meeting an hour early and sad that you left your homemade brownie by the kitchen counter…yes this is totally a pick me up.
I el-oh-vee-hee Chronicle Books. In fact, one of my goals would be to work on a project with them some day (preferably illustrating your next children’s book in case your reading this ChronicleBooks). Here’s to hoping meta tags work their magic.hah!
But anyway, because of the super cute video (below) I’m hooked and can’t wait to buy a copy of their recently published book called Creative Inc. written byMeg Mateo Ilasco and Joy Deangdeelert Cho. Which looks like an awesome resource for creative who have or are thinking about starting their own business. If you happen to have a copy already I’d love to get your personal opinion on it.
The DUMBO Arts Festival is always a fun (and might I add free) way to spend a weekend. There’s always a ton of installations and artwork to take in it which can be a bit overwhelming at times but art is suppose to overwhelm..right?We got there a little late last Saturday night but we still managed to see some thought provoking (or mind numbing which ever direction you prefer to go) shows like Eric Corriel, “DUMBO Underwater” which was right across the street from Adam Matta‘s sidewalk performance as a “human beatbox”. Walking into this annual festival I had to be prepared to take in the creativity that sprung out from every which way which is what makes this one of my favorite art festivals in NYC because it feels more like a ride than anything else. This festival is what I always imagine the cirque du soleil family would be doing behind the scenes and during their down time..hehe. An overall good weekend for me…now back to work. HAPPY MONDAY!
