I hope that I'm in good health and living with my husband, who is also in good health and that we're enjoying life and taking it easy! Add a Comment
It's been a few days since I've written, so I thought I'd post something now before this blog got stale.
There's not really too much to post. I've been working on my newest book...both on the computer and in my mind. You know how you have those nights where you can't sleep? Well, that's the best time for me to brainstorm and decide what changes I'm going to make on my book. It's going a lot slower than I hoped, but between doing laundry, cooking and "taking care" of darling hubby, I get sidetracked easily. Not to mention when friends call or email. I have to answer right away, right? <G> And, we can't forget about Facebook, can we?
The weather is still crappy here in central North Carolina. Where the heck is spring? I know it's technically still winter, but geesh, this is the south!
I've managed to read and write a few more reviews since my last entry on this blog. I've done "Between Friends" by Kristy Kiernan for "Affaire de Coeur's" March/April issue. Gave the book three stars...
Also read and reviewed "Remember Me" by Laura Moore for ReaderToReader.com. This is her first of the "Rosewood Trilogy" and a delightful read.
Then I've also done a private review for marketing purposes of Jill Bryne's memoir, "Step on a Crack" which reveals her life-long struggle with abuse and depression and how she managed to overcome her problems and lead a fulfilling life.
I have two more books to read and review for ReaderTo Reader.com, then I will submit a review for the New York Journal of Books...this one will be a children's book. Hopefully with all these things going on, I'll be able to concentrate more on my writing and get more accomplished.
PHEW....
I haven't written in a while, but have been busy, though I don't feel like I've accomplished very much.
I completed five chapters on my next book...my sequel to "Tiny Angel" but the other night while lying in bed, I decided to redo it and change it completely. Argh, the joys of being a writer...
Thank God for computers. If I had to write using a typewriter, I would have given up a long time ago.
My exciting new is that I have just recently been accepted as a reviewer for the New York Journal of Books and I'm so excited about that. After being a reviewer for several years for "Affaire de Coeur" magazine as well as ReaderToReader.com, this is another feather in my cap. NYJB is more widespread, so I'm thrilled. My first review with NYJB is for one of my favorite author's debut book: "The Sweet By and By" written by Todd Johnson. I met Todd when he was at the Literary Fair at UNC Chapel Hill and bawled throughout his reading. His book touched my heart and soul, and if you want to know more about it, check out my review.
I also had the privilege of chatting with Todd privately during the holidays. Amelia, a neighbor and a dear friend, and Todd's cousin came to her Christmas party while he was back home in NC. What a joy it was to pick his brain and discuss books with him. I am truly blessed.
Just received my first royalty check for "Tiny Angel"...what a thrill, and confirmation that I AM an author!
Well, we were hit with a doozie on Friday night and Saturday. Though we only had about four inches of the white stuff, the ice underneath has made for treacherous driving conditions. I'm looking out my office window and remembering all the years I spent in my native Massachusetts dealing with the dreaded snow and ice, hoping it will all melt soon.
I hate the snow, hate the ice, and hate the cold! How's that for being emphatic?
But the older I get, the less I like it, and after encountering black ice when I lived on Cape Cod and ended up in someone's front yard after going through a split-rail fence from the ice, it gives me the shivers--not only from the temperature, but from the problems it causes too. Needless to say, I'm happy to be safe and snug in my house and not having to deal with it. Getting to be a wimp in my old age!
Now, seeing I'm stuck inside and not suffering cabin fever (yet!) do you think I'm spending my time working on my next book? Heck, no. I'm busy putting together everything to do my taxes. Ugh...that time of year again, and every year I dread it, but it's a necessary evil. So, maybe I'll be a bit lucky (?) and this nasty weather will hang around a bit longer...but not too much longer...so once I get my taxes done I can concentrate on my writing.
I hope all my dear colleagues out there have their noses to the keyboard and are pounding away working on their next best seller because this lady isn't doing so at the present time. But watch out...I'll be pounding away soon.
Cheers all!
My dear friend Sue has posted my reviews on her blog. Check them out at:

It's a sunny, albiet chilly day here in central NC and a good time to get cracking on my writing. I have completed four chapters to my new book, "Tommy's Angel" but need to discipline myself to work and accomplish more. If anyone has the recipe for doing this, please send it to me!
My beloved has taken the '66 Mustang out for a ride and to spend time with another old car enthuiast, so I have no excuse for not working. So, what am I doing? Posting to my blog! Is that procrastination or what?
But I want to keep up to date with this journal and not fade into the woodwork, so I'm posting inconsequential drivel. Hope all my colleagues are busy at work and pounding on the keys for their next manuscript. Happy weekend all.
Aday: How long have you been writing and submitting picture books?
Nancy: This is actually the first children’s book I have written. I have illustrated several over the years, though I started writing “Tiny Angel” before I left MA in 1995, but other things got in the way of completing and submitting this manuscript.
Aday: I read at your site that you are hoping this will evolve into a series. Will each book follow the same theme or will they change? How many books are you planning on writing?
Nancy: I plan to write a book for each child characterized in “Tiny Angel” giving me three additional books, which I may expand on further if I find the books are well accepted. Each child has their own differences and problems, and I want to touch on all of them. And, each child will also have their own guardian angel to guide them as well as maybe frustrate them, but they will learn a valuable lesson from them as well as gain much-needed confidence.
Aday: What will be your method(s) for promoting/marketing Tiny Angel?
Nancy: I have set up three blogs to promote my book, and they are mentioned on Facebook, Goodreads, JacketFlap and MySpace. I plan to contact a few local schools as well as my library to promote Macy’s story.
Truthfully, having mostly been on the other end of publishing dealing with editing and such, I never realized marketing and promoting was so much work!
My main focus is on writing my next book in the series, and I’ll need to carve out some time to do in-depth research, but if you have any suggestions, I’m open to them!
Aday: Do you plan to illustrate all the books you write? How would you react to a publisher that wanted to use a different artist?
Nancy: I would like to illustrate all my books if possible. I had a bit of a challenge with “Tiny Angel” for I went through an emotionally har
I've had the pleasure of not only being a published author through GAP (Guardian Angel Publishing, Inc.) but I've also had the extreme pleasure to have read and review several books published by them. I am completely humbled to be included with this group of very talented authors and illustrators, and I'm sure those who purchase and read the many books offered through GAP will come away feeling touched and proud to have these books for their children and grandchildren.
When Brianna tires of little sister Julianne always doing things she does, and always wanting to be with her, Brianna decides she wants to trade her in for a new sister. Going along with her, Brianna's mom calls the "Sister Exchange" to see who they can offer by way of trade. When Brianna is offered a sister who talks too much, she declines. The same happens with a sister who snores loudly, and one who has stinky feet. But, when Brianna is offered a sister who will want to play with her, do the things she does, and follow her, she excitedly accepts only to learn the sister they are offering is her own little sister, Julianne.
This story is another way of showing children that though they may think another sibling would be more fun, because the sibling they have may get on their nerves and drive them crazy, deep down they love who they have and really would not trade for anything.
Kit Grady’s illustrations add to this delightful story and will be enjoyed by every child who at one time or another has wanted to trade in their sibling(s).
Mr. McNamee has penned a delightful rhyming tale that I’m sure everyone will relate to. Who among us has not wondered what life would be like if we were anything we could be?
Children always have these thoughts and wonder what life would be like if they were anyone else, especially one of their favorite animals. Mr. McNamee has shown that if we could be whatever we wanted, we are loved for who we are and who we are is what really matters.
Marina Movshina’s charming illustrations will touch your heart and make a perfect complement to Mr. McNamee’s text.
I have been getting some wonderful reviews for my book "Tiny Angel" so I thought it only appropriate that I read and review some of GAPs (Guardian Angel Publishing, Inc.) books to post to my blog too...
Please watch, for they are forthcoming!

Tiny Angel by Nancy Carty Lepri
In a day and age when chapter books for tweens can sometimes be more hype than substance, Nancy Carty Lepri's Tiny Angel is a breath of fresh air. When ten-year-old Macy Carver's dad is transferred to a new town, Macy leaves behind everything she knew even her best friend. Suddenly she is the new kid on the block and is the recipient of cruel bullying. Then, she receives an unexpectant heavenly visitor - her guardian angel Jody.
There are numerous positive lessons children can learn from Tiny Angel.
1. The gift of compassion - Macy's keen discernment helps her look beyond herself and extend friendship to Tommy, a needy boy in her school.
2. Another perspective - Macy gives readers another view from her pew. She is able, through the help of her guardian angel Jody, to see beyond herself.
3. Generosity - Macy could have been selfish and kept the award money she won from the spelling bee competition, but instead she sees a need greater than herself and donates her money to help those in need.
4. Convictions - Macy's life reflects her heart of mercy for the underdog while continuing to stand up for what you believe in even if it means being rejected.
5. Educational - Children will hone their spelling skills when they attend the spelling bees with Macy and her friends.
6. Faith - Little hearts will grow in their faith when they fall in love with Macy's guardian angel Jody and learn that only faith can devour fear.
Macy isn't some goody-two-shoes. Ms. Lepri pulls back the curtain and allows us to see Macy's struggles.
I think Tiny Angel should be read in elementary schools everywhere. It would open up dialogue about bullying and how devastating it can be to an individual and teach students the lost art of compassion.
If you want a great book with some character building lessons tucked in every chapter for the children in your life, you will want to get a copy of Tiny Angel.
You can purchase Tiny Angel by Nancy Carti Lepri at http://www.guardianangelpublishing.com/tiny-angel.htm. While you are there, you may want to look around at some of their other amazing books.

I want to wish all my dear friends and colleagues a happy and healthy 2010. I'd also love to thank those of you who have purchased "Tiny Angel". I'm currently working on my next book of which I hope to make a series. This book will be focused on Tommy and the tentative title is "Tommy's Angel"! (Very imaginative, huh?
Anyway, my warmest wishes to you all and please be sure to post comments on my page!
I'm proud to say I've just sold ten autographed copies of my latest release, "Tiny Angel". How cool is that??? Thanks from the bottom of my heart for those who purchased a copy from me. I hope the children who read my book love it and please be sure to give me any feedback.

I am happy to say I got through all the mucky-muck of applying for my copyright for "Tiny Angel" and it's in the process. What amazes me is they say it could take up to a year and a half to get completed! Is the government getting that many copyright orders to take that long? Unreal. But, at least I know "my baby" is protected as of the 24th and I'll just have to be patient and wait for my notice to come back.
Hope everyone had a happy and healthy Thanksgiving. I had the joy of sharing the day with my wonderful daughter and husband, who by the way, did all the cooking! Am I blessed, or what? Of course we ate too much, but were able to relax and watch movies by the fire. We also got several phone calls from family and friends, which made the day complete. Tomorrow it's back to work...no shopping for me!

Review of Tiny Angel, by Nancy Carty Lepri
reviewed by Mayra Calvani
Things aren't looking too bright at the moment for 8-year old Macy. She's just moved into a new place, left her best friend behind, and in her new school there's a bully who makes her life miserable every chance he can get. But just when things can't seem to get any worse, she receives a visit from a special little friend: her very own guardian angel! This little angel is witty and has an attitude, and does her best to infuse Macy with strength and confidence. Finally an opportunity comes for Macy to prove herself at a bee spelling competition... Will she go for it and show everyone what she's made of, or succumb to her fear of success?
Tiny Angel is a well-written, delightful story that will entertain middle-grade girls. Macy, with all her doubts and insecurities, is a character young girls 8 and up will identify with. The story has a good message--there comes a time when we have to be bold and act in order to achieve our dreams--but it is not preachy; it's simply a good story about school, friends, being oneself, and achieving one's full potential. Highly recommended.

(BOOK EXCERPT)
Chapter 1
“Hey, chubbo quit hogging the sidewalk!” Kenny Thompson yanked the front of his bike off the ground, circled around eight-year-old Macy Carver, and stuck out his tongue.
“Don’t!” She yelled.
Kenny cut the bike’s front wheel, covering her with dirty water. Laughing, he sped toward school.
“Creepazoid!” Macy brushed mud from her jeans, which made a worse mess. Mud had splattered her favorite top. Tears filled her eyes. Stupid North Carolina! Why did her dad have to move here? She hated being the new kid in class.
Thanks to Kenny, the kids either ignored her or were mean. To make things worse, she had to sit next to him.
Sighing, she trudged on, hoping that Kenny would have sprouted huge warts on his nose at school.
The first bell rang. Macy walked to her desk and tripped over Kenny’s outstretched foot.
“Hey four-eyes.” He laughed at her. “Are you a klutzo, too? Aw, poor Macy—dirty and klutzy.”
Macy grabbed the side of her desk to keep from falling. She glared at Kenny, ready to stick out her tongue, but decided he didn’t need anything else to tease her about.
Biting her lip, she sat at her desk. She wanted to go home—fat lot of good that would do her. She knew she wouldn’t feel better there. (continued)

In Tiny Angel, Macy suffers from an angst of childhood that many of us go through; being the new kid in school. Not only does she suffer from that, but the miserable day to day teasing she gets from the school bully, not knowing anyone in the new town she had to move to and her own personal insecurities.
To her rescue comes a tiny angel...it's so funny when the angel whizzes by and knocks the bully out of the chair...and then...well, you have to read the rest of the story.
This book is written in a wonderfully whimsical way, and Ms Lepri does not talk down to the target audience.
Ms. Lepri took me back to my own childhood and made me wish I had had my own angel to protect me.
I highly recommend this book for young and old alike. Erin Collins, Author, Shadow Walk: The Gathering
