Happy New Year — again! February 10th marks the start of the Lunar New Year as well as the Year of the Snake (specifically the Water Snake). As the most significant holiday in China, the Lunar New Year is like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year rolled up into one giant celebration. Personally, this has always been one of my favorite holidays as it always brings back childhood memories of the smell of fresh cut flowers, red envelopes filled with “lucky money”, big family dinners, and vibrant, lively festivals with lion dancing and firecrackers. Chinese culture has always been a great source of inspiration for my
work.
The Snake is the sixth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animal signs that include the Rat (or Mouse), Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Horse, Sheep (or Goat), Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Don’t know what zodiac sign you are? Look it up on this handy little chart I created here.
According to Chinese tradition, a person’s birth sign has a profound influence on personality and destiny. Those born under this sign are said to be charming, clever, analytical, and shrewd. Fired with intense determination, they hate to fail at anything and are determined to achieve their goals. Snakes tend to gravitate toward the finer things in life and so are sometimes deemed materialistic. Quick learners, lead by wisdom and intuition, Snakes will find that success comes easily to them. Famous Snakes include Alfred Nobel, Pablo Picasso, Bob Dylan, Audrey Hepburn, Brad Pitt, Oprah Winfrey, John F. Kennedy, and J. K. Rowling.

I just returned from a week in Paris. Despite it being cold and gray the entire week that I was there, Paris is as beautiful and charming as I had hoped. It’s a city I’ve been wanting to visit for years. I took French for 7 years when I was younger. The French did not quite come back to me but my Frenglish was excellent!
I stayed at the Hotel La Belle Juliette, a lovely boutique hotel located in the St.-Germain-des-Prés area of Paris. The hotel was charming and stylish with many cute Parisian details.

The Notre Dame Cathedral–a masterpiece of solemn beauty.
After climbing 400 steps of a spiral staircase–a breathtaking view from the top of the Notre Dame.
Never having been to the Eiffel Tower before but having looked at an image of the Eiffel Tower many times because of a very popular illustration I created of Kiwi and Pear at the Eiffel Tower, it was a little surreal to finally be there.
The Pont de Solférino, a footbridge over the River Seine. What was especially intriguing to me about this bridge were the thousands of love locks attached to the railings on the bridge.
I had never seen anything like this before, however, it’s apparently quite common to find love locks on bridges all over Europe and Asia and I read they are even starting to pop up on the Brooklyn Bridge. Couples inscribe their names on padlocks, attach them to the bridges, and then toss the keys into the river to symbolize everlasting love. Cute huh?
Climbed more steps, 234 to be exact, at The Arc de Triomphe to behold beautiful night views of Champs-Élysées Avenue and the Eiffel Tower.

Housed in a former railway station built in the late 19th century, the interior of The Musée d’Orsay was stunning.
French impressionist and post-impressionist masterpieces by Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cezanne, Gauguin, and Van Gogh set against the backdrop of charming, old railway station details like big, beautiful clock windows. I was surely in art heaven.
One of my favorite parts of the trip was a visit to Montmartre. Perched up high on a hill in the northern part of Paris, Montmartre was once the Bohemian artistic quarter of Paris where artists such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Dali, and Renoir once lived and worked. With its steep, winding cobblestone streets, ivy-covered buildings, and many cafes, Montmartre has retained a quaint and charming ‘village’ ambiance. Movies such as Amelie and Moulin Rouge are set in Montmartre.
I didn’t catch a show here but, as I was standing outside, it was fun to think what the Moulin Rouge must have been like in its heyday.
The Musée du Louvre was spectacular. The building itself, a former royal palace, was incredibly ornate and massive with elaborately painted and plastered ceilings and walls.
The
Mona Lisa and the
Venus de Milo were just some of the many treasures I saw at the Louvre.
Galeries Lafayette Haussman, must be one of the most stunning department stores I have ever been to. The center of the 10-story building is open and atrium-like, and it’s capped by a huge, gorgeous dome made of glass and steel which uses hundreds of lights in a dazzling display of multi-colored illumination.
At the Bon Marche Grand Epicerie, an international food market, the food displays were a delight in their own way and it was such a fun place to browse.
One thing I learned on this trip was that the French do sweets like nobody’s business and they do things with chocolate that you would not believe! I had some of the best desserts I ever had in my life in Paris and, yes, that’s a chocolate ape! For anyone with the faintest interest in desserts, Pierre Hermé is undoubtedly a must-visit when in Paris.
Some highlights of French food. The crêpe in the lower left (chocolate with toasted almonds, salted butter caramel, vanilla ice cream, and fresh whipped cream) was the best I ever had and was from a place called Little Breizh.
Yes, I know it’s Paris – but I can’t live without my Asian food! Above some highlights of Asian food in Paris. If you’re looking for a nice and affordable meal around the Louvre (or a little reprieve from French food), I discovered a little gem right around the corner from the Rue de Rivoli side of the Louvre, a Japanese ramen (lamen in French) restaurant called Higuma.
Can you tell how excited I was to be there?

The New York Comic Con, a pop culture cornucopia that brings together the comic book, movie, music, and TV worlds, descended upon New York City this past weekend. For the first time in it’s seven-year history, the convention was sold out with over 115,000 people in attendance. I was lucky enough to nab a professional four-day pass before they were sold out – one of the perks of being an author and teacher. I had such a fun time!
Larger-than-life exhibitor booths, installations, and costumed characters filled the show floor. As I was leaving the show Friday night, a 9 foot tall Transformers Bumble Bee came walking up the front door of the Javits (lower-left pic) – just another normal day at the NY Comic Con LOL
Costumes galore – I LOVE all the fervent fandom! I don’t think you will find a more passionate group of people.
Products galore – everything from samurai swords to old-timey aviator goggles and never-ending walls of t-shirts and plush dolls.

It wasn’t all fun and games – I managed to attend some educational/professional panels on pitching ideas, building community through social media, and making designer toys. I gathered lots of interesting info I can share with my students at SVA.

I just returned from the 41st Annual Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) Summer Conference in Los Angeles. I came home feeling so inspired and empowered. One of the main messages of the conference that really resonated with me was to create in a way that speaks to the inner child within you. Here are a few other words of wisdom from the conference that I wanted to share with you to add positive and inspiring thoughts to your day!

The best thing I love about attending these conferences are the people - whether novice or expert, everyone is so encouraging and supportive. It is unlike any industry and I feel truly blessed to be part of it.

This past weekend I went to The Armory Show, an international contemporary art fair and one of of the most important annual art events in New York. The Armory Show featured over 200 leading galleries from around the world displaying some of the most notable in contemporary and modern art, all for sale! I saw art that was big, conceptual, bright, awe-inspiring, innovative, bizarre and playful — a visual cornucopia of colors, textures and materials! Since my bank account can’t quite support an Andy Warhol, I went more to window shop. Here are some pieces which particularly caught my eye — hope they inspire you like they inspired me!
You can’t tell here but these photographs by Andres Serrano using silhouettes of staged toy figures were big – about 4.5 ft tall by 5.5 ft wide!
I was especially delighted to see work by one of my favorite artists, Yoshitomo Nara.
There were even pieces by Pablo Picasso!
And Keith Haring!
Believe it or not this piece is made of cast resin (looks like stuffed garbage bags doesn’t it?)!
This one is by the always bewildering Marina Abramovic, I wonder if the person comes with this piece? LOL

I hope everyone had a nice Valentine’s Day (whether you’re a fan of the holiday or not)! Any holiday that fills the world with hearts is an awesome one in my book! I spent the evening teaching my Greeting Card Design class at the School of Visual Arts but I ♥ my students so that’s ok, right?

Happy New Year — again! January 23rd marks the start of the Lunar New Year as well as the Year of the Dragon (specifically the Water Dragon). My cultural heritage has always been a great source of inspiration for me. The very first card line I launched when I started Wanart featured my Zodiac Zoo designs which was a simpler, more stylized version of the zodiac animals and they are still one of my best-selling today.
The Dragon is the fifth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animal signs that include the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Snake, Horse, Sheep (or Goat), Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Apparently, everything is magnified in a Dragon year, there will be spectacular successes as well as crash-and-burn failures. Also, as water does not have a definite shape and it represents flow, movement, and fluidity, this will be a year of changes, adjustments, new directions, and unexpected turn of events. This is the year to try new things but be sure to tread carefully and prepare for the unexpected!

Wow, 2011 was an AMAZING year! So many things have happened this past year for which I am beyond-words-grateful. The year also ended with a surprising bang as I was presented with a new book contract (more info below)!

I was able to combine my two passions — art and technology — with the release of Kiwi and Pear’s World Adventure, an interactive storybook app, and Kiwi and Pear’s Balloon Adventure game for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. With over 25,000 downloads combined to date – I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to spread love, hugs, and happiness all over the world!

My book We Belong Together was 1 of 150 books recently selected out of 650 entries nationwide to be featured in the Society of Illustrators 2011 Original Art Show which had it’s opening reception on October 27, 2011.

I have attended this show twice before in 2009 and 2010. I will never forget when I got to meet Eric Carle last year at this show where he received his lifetime achievement award from the Society of Illustrators!
The reception was a madhouse – two floors, filled wall to wall, with people and art!
Part of the fun was trying to locate my piece on the wall and there it is!
Scholastic chose the last spread from the book to be featured in the show. It was so exciting and a bit surreal to see it on the wall! My book might have actually also been the only board book in the entire show!
Out of the 150 books chosen to be included in the show, three were awarded medals-one Gold and two Silver-for best in show. There was an awards ceremony to recognize these winners.

To celebrate the recent release of WE BELONG TOGETHER I’m giving away not one but two books! Bare with me as I’m still catching up from all that’s happened in the last several weeks! Barely a week back from the SCBWI LA Conference and I had to jump right into final preparations for the New York International Gift Fair!
The New York International Gift Fair (NYIGF) is a trade show that is produced twice annually by GLM Shows and is open to the trade only (people involved in gift-related businesses including buyers, press, sales reps, wholesalers, importers, exporters, and distributors). Held in January and August in New York City, the Fair hosts 2,800 exhibiting companies showcasing the very best lines across the home, lifestyle and gift spectrum and attracts 35,000 attendees from all 50 states and 85 countries.
I’ve been exhibiting at NYIGF for about 5 years now and have met many of my customers and even my first publisher Blue Apple Books at this show. Setting up the booth for a show is a tedious process but it’s fun and rewarding to see everything put together when it’s all done!
It took us 8 hours to set up the booth – probably the fastest we’ve ever set up the booth.
Voila!! The Wanart booth at the New York International Gift Show Summer 2011. The fabric on the sides of the booth are custom-made curtains from RoseBrand. The backdrop is a vinyl banner from Echod Graphics. The wood-like foam flooring is from Soft and Safe Floors. The display shelves on the sides which I painted to match my furniture are from Clear Solutions.
What a whirlwind kind of summer! With the SCBWI Conference, the new book releases, and the New York Gift Fair past me, for the first time in a couple of months I feel like I can breathe. Now it’s time to switch back into creative mode and dive back into some new book ideas – can you believe it’s September already!? @_@

A little late on this recap but I just had to share! Right after my first picture book Greetings from Kiwi and Pear came out in 2009 I joined the Society Of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators to absorb as much as I could about the craft of writing/illustrating children’s books and about the publishing world.
Every year SCBWI hosts a summer conference in Los Angeles. The conference is described as “4 days of agents, editors, publishers, workshops and networking designed to take your writing and illustration to the next level.” I attended for the first time last year and left feeling so energized and inspired, I was hooked! This year was special as it was their 40th Anniversary with a star-studded lineup of keynote speakers like Judy Blume, David Small, Bruce Coville, Jerry Pinkney, Laurie Halse Anderson, Libba Bray, Norton Juster, Gary Paulsen and more. I left this conference feeling not just a creative spark but a fire burning in my heart and mind. Some pictures from the conference:

What an incredible weekend. I just back from the SCBWI conference in LA and I have so much inspiring stuff to share but I am literally in the midst of final preparations for the New York International Gift Show which starts THIS Sunday! I’ll have to save the recaps for later but, I have some exciting news that I just can’t wait to share with you all!
I just found out yesterday that my soon-to-be-released book We Belong Together was 1 of 121 books selected out of 650 entries nationwide to be featured in the 2011 Society of Illustrators Original Art Show! The list is so impressive this year and includes such highly esteemed illustrators in the world of children’s books as William Joyce, Dan Santat, Kadir Nelson, Peter Brown, Eric Carle, Tomie DePaola, Loren Long, Maurice Sendak, Mo Willems, Lane Smith and more! I still can’t believe I will be featured alongside artists whose books I loved as a child and still totally idolize today! I almost feel like I don’t deserve such an honor!
