26. 5 Days in another CIty - Melbourne in a blink!


Journal of a sojourn in the southern capital from afternoon, 14th, to morning of 19th January.
Virgin Blue ushered us in to a Melbourne welcome such us as only Melbourne can turn on - 37 degree heat with a cold wind! The next day was typically 21.
Did I pack for all seasons - sort of - short sleeved T-shirts and a Jacket.
We stayed in Melbourne's newest hotel - Causeway 353 Little Collins Street - opened in October 08. Breakfast waadt ist.xml">

When we arrived the access alley way was a hive of activity. Cafes and diners were opened - about 8 in that alley way. Shops and specialist food outlets were abuzz. People wandered up and down continuously.

By evening it was a different story - deserted! This was typical of most of the lane and alleyways in the City. I have to say, not knowing Melbourne, it made finding a place for tea interesting, especially if tired and not wanting to walk for yonks! By the time we left we knew every eatery open post 6.00pm!

'Interesting' stuff is around every corner! Loved the arcades! Below are some views of the Royal Arcade - Popular name "Gog & Magog" after the 2 charmers who bong the chimes every 15 minutes and once for each hour on the hour. You can hear it streets away. [Pics 3, 4, 5]
















The specialty shops were myriad - you name it! A shop specializing in dark dark chocolate [yum] sat strategically under the guardianship of Blind Father Time. No one watching - INDULGE! [Pic 6 - Father Time guards the entry to Koko Black Chocolateria - time spent there is measured in kilos!] [Pic 7 Sweet Makers showing us what is in our just desserts!] Temptation lurked around every corner - the solution - walk, walk, walk it off!

Everything was colourful and quirky.

Among the eye-catchers were the bags and the beads! [Pcs 9, 10, 11 Beads and bangles, Baubles and bling,

Every fine and feathered thing! ]















The bags were no less imaginative and colourful
- especially the clubbing / evening bags .

These sparkled with all the colours of the rainbows or were just outright BLING! Of course there were matching shoes. Partners' patience was just about given out, so we didn't get to shoes this trip.......

The staff there were deserving of some sort of customer service award!

27. Creativity and Sir Ken Robinson

I am in the process of helping to create a K-5 co-op program for my daughter who will enter kindergarten next year called PACE - Peace. Arts. Creativity. Environment. I was trying to explain to someone the other day how valuable I think creativity is and how lacking I feel it is in many of the traditional models of school, how we too often value only a small piece of the human potential in school, and how we often give more weight to certain talents than others. The director of the school we will be joining sent me this link (thanks, Sandy!) from Sir Ken Robinson who, in twenty minutes, so articulately and with great wit zeroes in on how essential creativity is in the current world and how we need to change our paradigm. He argues that "creativity is as important as literacy." If you have twenty minutes, take a look. He really, really has something valuable to say.

29. 10 YA Books I Bought for the Holidays

Hey, last minute shoppers. Looking for the YA reader on your list? As an author, I often get asked to share the titles I buy people for the holidays. Here’s the list this year in no particular order. I’ve put a little star (*) by them if they are for mature readers (you know mature themes with sex and drugs and such) but I think all were tastefully done.

1. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Actually, I bought the trilogy. Uglies. Pretties. Specials. Future. Environmental. Cleanly written and fast-paced. They’re wonderful for the hard to please reader.

2. You Remind Me of You by Eireann Corrigan (*)
For the language lover. A writer’s writer. Hands down, she’s one of the best writers in YA (in my opinion) for her raw lyricism. These are all poems but have a story arc. Delicious.

3. How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff (*)
Beautifully written futuristic tale that packs an emotional punch. All of my students have loved this one.

4. The Tribes of Palos Verdes by Joy Nicholson (*)
For the surfer in your life. Or the person who just likes a really good story about a girl trying to make sense of her life. My male students have also loved the rich writing and tone of this novel.

5. Looking for Alaska by John Green (*)
Funny, heartbreaking, so well written it makes me want to cry. For the Catcher in the Rye fan in your life.

6. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
My friend and I were talking yesterday about the single literary relationship that defined our childhoods…Gil and Anne. Hands down. I will never stop loving these books.

7. I Was A Teenage Fairy by Francesca Lia Block(*)
Wild, interesting writing. Great characterization. Block’s books are for the edgy reader in your life who is still, deeply, a romantic.

8. Saving Zoe by Alyson Noel (*)
Alyson is one of the nicest writers I know. Her books are great and your teenage girls
should be reading them. Romantic and fast-paced, this is what you should be buying instead of Gossip Girl.

9. Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
For the sweet middle school reader in your life (and those of us who love those stories). This is a story of breaking free of conformity and also a story of love. Doesn’t get better than that.

10. Sabriel by Garth Nix
If you’ve got a fantasy lover on your hands and he or she hasn’t read this (and the two that follow), this is a wonderful journey with a strong female lead.

Interview with multi-award winning illustrator and author, Ian Beck

Jennifer: Hi Ian,

Thanks for agreeing to the interview!

I’ve had a ball tracking through the amazing adventures you’ve had with pen and ink! You have a wealth of experience in other arty areas, from designing album covers (including the cover for Yellow Brick Road”), to advertising, from cards and calendars to murals.

What do you feel this more commercially driven art brought to your work as a children’s book illustrator?

‘Marketing’ is something that seems almost a dirty word to purists but it is an essential part of any saleable product in a competitive marketplace – does the ‘selling’ aspect play any part in your creative process? Should it?8">

IAN: I began my career as a ‘commercial’ illustrator, making drawings and paintings for anyone who asked, I just wanted to make a living from illustrating. That had been my goal since I was very young and I had noticed ‘spot’ drawings and the like in newspapers and magazines. My ambition had been to do something similar. I spent a very varied and happy twenty years or so in that illustration world. I learned a great deal technically through the trial and error of making drawings for difficult and or demanding clients. I learned patience, and the ability to redraft, remake, remodel, with a smile and good grace. This all helped when I was offered my first children’s book to illustrate (Round and Round the Garden) in 1982. It helped me to be consistent in my coloring, to get the mood of the book as demanded by the editor and designer, a process I was by then very used to. The selling part is obviously important. No publisher wants to make a book that does not sell, nor does any author. I certainly built on my experience in commercial illustration to make my pictures ‘appealing’ if that is the right word. I tried to bring tenderness and charm to my depiction of babies or animal characters. That was how I worked anyway, my commercial work had been influenced by the world of children’s illustration from the word go. I collected illustrated books from my time at Art School, and I still do.

Jennifer: With Heroes like Edward Ardizzone and Harold Jones and a teacher like Raymond Briggs one could say you were always going to end up illustrating children’s books.

What were your favourite books as a child? What images stuck in your mind - were they from books, films or somewhere else? How have these influences shaped your approach to your art?


IAN: I grew up in a house with very few books. Ours was what you would call a ‘blue collar’ family. My father was a milkman, (as was Raymond Briggs’ father) we had a patchy library of mostly old novels, I remember we had volume two of Gone With the Wind, no sign of volume one. The printed images I saw were either in comics, magazines or newspapers. I began my interest by trying to copy those images, often on to the endpapers and flyleaves of the old books that were lying around. Later I joined my local library and began my life long love affair with books and the pictures in them. I started with Hugh Lofting’s Dr Dolittle books. I read all of those in sequence and often reread them too. Later I moved on to Richmal Crompton’s Just William books, and I still read and laugh over those.

I think however if there is a single illustration that I remember, that opened my eyes and mind, it was the one by Pauline Baynes, in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, it is of Mr Tumnus out in the snow with his parcels and the street lamp. It still gives me the shivers. I think my own illustration work has been made of so many influences it would be hard for am to untangle them all, but they are all there in some way even if the result is recognizably ‘me’.


Jennifer: The ability to tell a story inside a story as with your book “Five Little Ducks” –How did you set about that now classic ‘Beck’ book?

Was the other story of the fox there from the outset or did it ‘occur to you’ in the way the speaking crow did in Tom Trueheart?


IAN: As so often happens, Five Little Ducks began as a quite different book. I was discussing with Judith Elliot, then the overall editor at and founder of Orchard Books, the possibility of a book about night time. I had made some roughs, written out some ideas, but it had stalled. Jill Slotover who was an editor there suggested the rhyme of the five little ducks. I saw it complete at once in my mind, the fox, the brave duckling etc etc. I drew some thumbnail sized color visuals in a sketch book, and that was it, go ahead, and I did. It seemed to flow very naturally and

was a very positive experience.


Jennifer: This brings me to the ‘right brain’ process present in much of creativity.

In one interview, you spoke of ‘trusting’ an inner nudge that told you to go with the talking crow, even though never envisaged as part of your original idea for Tom’s story.

How does this work in the illustrative process and is it different to that in the writing process?

How do the two creative processes compare?


IAN: In writing a longer story there is naturally a certain amount of planning but as you work on something the imagination creeps up behind you occasionally and goes, ‘boo, weren’t expecting that were you’? This is just what happened with the talking bird, it seems meant and obvious to me now that Jollity the crow should be there, but he was meant at first just to be a target for Tom to throw a snowball at. Once the notion popped into my head that the bird would speak the book opened up for me there and then. My drawings were always planned more rigorously, I was

very much in control of them, I can’t imagine the same leap occurring during the making of a drawing.

Jennifer: I’ve checked out http://www.tomtrueheart.com/ and encourage readers to do ditto! The silhouettes perfectly suit the darker story, but are very different to your style say for example used in “The Teddy Robber” and again from “Puss in Boots”.

How do you decide on your approach to each project?


IAN: The silhouettes were not in the planning of the book at all. I was working on some ideas for the cover of Tom Trueheart with the designer Molly Dallas at Oxford University Press. We had a lot of ideas scattered about on a table, when she remembered that the endpapers I had made for a previous book (The Oxford Nursery Story Book) had used silhouettes. I turned the image of Tom walking with his packstaff into a silhouette and it seemed to click into place at once. It was a short step from that to illustrating the whole book with silhouettes. It was quite a discipline to learn, but a very enjoyable one. So I suppose this approach was unplanned but seemed right. Most of the picture books would be planned with the designer and editor together. They have a valuable input as well after all, quite rightly. Sometimes an editor will say, ‘it would be nice if this book were some thing like this’, and refer to a past book or approach, that certainly happened with The Little Mermaid, I went for the sad and the romantic, the lavish and the wide screen in that book very different to much of my other more graphic output, I imagine for the first and last time.


Jennifer: Any career path is a journey and one might have predicted that having the story teller gift (as demonstrated in “Five Little Ducks”) you would eventually arrive at the point where you wrote your own stories.

Did you always want to do this, or is this a new adventure?

Why now?


IAN: I was encouraged to write my own original story to illustrate by my first editor David Fickling. This became The Teddy Robber, a book still held in affection by readers twenty years later, as I am constantly reminded by teachers and children on school visits.

The urge to write narrative though has been with me from the beginning. When I was a young commercial illustrator I went to creative writing classes. It was my intention to write adult fiction. I wrote a couple of short stories, began a novel, but it all ended in a drawer unresolved, unfinished. The urge was still there, the itch, the frustration if you like, but all necessarily suppressed under my busy drawing schedules, the need to earn a living, growing family life etc. Then the seed for Tom Trueheart was planted and grew a little in the potting shed inside my brain. He lay dormant for a while until, sadly, one of my best friends died. This was a big wake up call, as he was younger than me. ‘Come on’, I thought, ’finish that idea, grow that seedling, do what you really want to do, life is too short’. So then Tom actually got finished, with the encouragement of my agent Hilary Delamere. The publisher liked him and so did several other publishers. He is in ten languages now I think, so sometimes trusting your instinct is the way to go.

Jennifer: Tom‘s second book of adventures “Tom Trueheart and the Land of Dark Stories “ is darker by your own admission. The same applied to the progression of J.K.Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

What led to this?

What were the influences at work when you realized a second book needed to be written?

IAN: The second Tom Trueheart adventure came about by chance. I had not intended to write more than one book while I was busy writing the first, it seemed both contained, and complete. The first draft ended with Tom confronting the villain Ormestone in a wood and Ormestone turning him into Tom Thumb, ie Tom finally had his own story to complete. My editor Liz Cross read it and said that she didn’t think it was the end of book one, rather she felt it could be the beginning of book two. I was delighted to think that there would be a book two as I had enjoyed writing about Tom so much. Book two needed a new set of stories and characters, there was the unresolved business of Tom’s missing father, maybe he would make an appearance and so on, it all just slotted into place. I used some of those darker fairy story elements, wolves, castles, bats spiders, skeletons, and so on, imagining that the villain would go to where he would be appreciated, and all this with Tom shrunk down to the size of Tom Thumb. It was great fun to do, and I have now nearly finished the third book, provisionally called Tom Trueheart and the Land of Myths and Legends. As you may know Suppertime Entertainment are developing animated films based on the books, so we wait to see what happens next.


Jennifer: How did you feel as an illustrator about someone else doing your illustrative work, as with the book covers for paperback edition in UK [Adam Stower] and the USA edition [Brandon Dorman]?

IAN: It is something of a luxury and a delight to see other artist's interpretations of my characters and stories. As an illustrator myself you might expect me to be hyper critical, but no, I am very relaxed about it and I very much like what both Brandon Dorman and Adam Stower have done in relation to Tom Trueheart. Just recently, I saw the jacket for Pastworld which is far better than anything I might have done, completely spot on, designed by John Fordham and with an illustration by Paul Young, full of texture and mystery. It was sent to me as a 'fait accompli', and I couldn't be happier with it.

Jennifer: What do we expect to see next?

What about film scripts [ I noted the trailer on your site.]?

What about your own totally Beck picturebooks?

IAN: I have a big novel (in terms of length and ambition) coming out in the summer of 2009. It is called Pastworld. It has taken me four years to develop and complete, Bloomsbury will be publishing. It is a much darker book, aimed at older readers, twelve years and up. A complex book, and hard to sum up in a few words, it is a dark adventure set in what appears to be Victorian London. I suppose you would perhaps categorize it as ‘Steampunk’, there are airships, and murders, and strange passions. It has grown out of my obsession with London, the city I have lived in for forty years, with the science fiction novels of H G Wells, and movies and all sorts of other things muddled together. It may surprise some of my readers, even shock them. It is intended as an older read, it is nothing like Tom Trueheart, and it is not at all cute.

After that I am writing a novel for Oxford provisionally called The Hidden Kingdom, in which the hero is thrust into a sudden drama and the reader discovers the truth as the story develops and at the same time that the hero does. It is set in a mythical place and time and will I hope explore love as one of the subjects.

As to films, I wrote a short story for adults called The Summer House. A young film maker read it and wanted me to adapt it as a screenplay for a short film. I did the adaptation and the film was shot in France two summers ago. Through the magic luck of casting the director Daisy Gili, got Talulah Riley, fresh from the film of Pride and Prejudice as the young female lead, and a boy called Robert Pattinson as the young male lead. Rob of course is playing Edward Cullen in the film of Twilight which just opened ‘big’. So our little 13 minute film now has the added bonus of two rising stars. My son has a film making company and he kindly makes book trailers for me, we are looking forward to making the trailer for Pastworld plus a website where further mysteries can be developed.

As to Picture books, I very much enjoyed illustrating the book Winston The Book Wolf written by Marni McGee, but whether I will ever make another one of my own I don’t know, the longer form seems to have taken over.

Jennifer: You’ve had a lot of interviews that have covered a lot of ground.

Is there a question you wish you had been asked? Okay, now’s your chance! Question and answer – over to you!

Q. What would you have done if you hadn’t made books?

IAN: I would like to have been a ‘café concert’ cabaret entertainer in the mythical Paris of the 1900’s, singing in a tux with a cane, and hanging out with Ravel and Erik Satie and perhaps even having a passionate affair with Colette!

Jennifer: Yep – I can see you doing a Maurice Chevalier complete with top hat!

Maybe that is more than just a dream??????

Now here’s a tantalizing tease - Hidden Kingdom and Pastworld are coming up AND, with one shorter film under his belt already and two animated feature versions of the Tom Trueheart books under way, can we expect Ian to be off to Hollywood next with a blockbuster in his sights? Stay tuned!!!!!

33. Growing a Reader

Yesterday one of my students said a pretty cool thing. We were talking about "evolution of character" in their outside reading books and whether or not they as readers were satisfied with the growth the character did or did not make in the novel. One of my students commented that she didn't think her author was trying to grow a character; she thought he was "growing a reader." This gave me pause. I spend a lot of time with them talking about the elements of fiction, but she reminded me (both as a teacher and as an author) that the real role of fiction is to move a reader - emotionally, intellectually, or in some other way.

This is one of the reasons I'm so proud to write young adult fiction because I truly believe that so much of the YA fiction out there right now "grows readers" because it is centered around an emotional core. I got a lovely email from a reader last night. She said she started crying on page 200 of my book but "didn't know why" - and I wrote her back and said thank you. Even if she didn't know why she was crying, why that particular page got the tear ducts flowing for some reason, it moved her, and for that I am truly thankful as an author.

And for my student who reminded me why I, too, read.

34. Starting a school-wide Teen Book Club

I have the exciting opportunity of starting and facilitating the Teen Online Book Club for a local charter school. We're going to read three books each semester and discuss them using an online forum. I'm thrilled that I get to do this (both as a YA author and as a high school teacher) as it's been a bit of a dream for me for awhile and now everything seems to be in place to get it up and running. But now I have the task of deciding on the three books. And I don't want to choose my own book (that would just be weird). We're a public charter, so the books need to be fairly clean, they need to appeal to boys and girls, and they need to be literary enough for us to dig our teeth into. The school is opening the club up to the whole high school so we're looking at mostly 9th-12th graders. 7th and 8th graders will have the option of joining next fall. Any thoughts or suggestions for which three books I should start with?

37. 'A Moveable Feast' Library Benefit - A great idea for writers and readers

Last Friday, I was invited to be a guest author at our local library for an event called "A Moveable Feast." Six authors sat at six different tables ready to discuss books and reading over tea, coffee and desserts, and people bought tickets to the event. Our guests chatted with us about writing and reading and ate yummy desserts. At each table, they got to try a different dessert and the library earned money for books! It was an engaging evening full of great questions about writing, insights about the importance of reading, and, well, A LOT of sugar. In fact, the librarians told me that next year, they'll do it again but serve an appetizer first, then a soup, then some veggies, and THEN eventually a dessert. Still, the evening was amazing and I thought it was a cool thing to share with other writers and readers as something they could organize in their own community. Happy feasting!

40. Ohio All-School Read a Huge Success!

Early Friday September 26th, I pushed through the doors of Licking Valley High School in Newark, Ohio, the wide Ohio sky just shooting through with light behind me. I had flown in late the night before from California to engage in a school wide “author visit.” Licking Valley had selected my indie young adult novel, Songs for a Teenage Nomad, for their school-wide summer reading book and had invited me to spend the day with them.

I could never have imagined the amazing day that awaited me.

Songs was published in June 2007 by a California micro-press, Hip Pocket Press, and throughout the course of a year, won several awards, including the Ben Franklin Award for Best New Voice in Children’s/Young Adult Fiction and a silver medal for the IPPY awards for Young Adult Fiction. As a veteran high school teacher of over ten years, I’ve written curriculum for the book available on my website and have toured schools along the west coast, Hawaii and, now, Ohio doing writing workshops and readings with the book.

The road has been exciting, challenging and a virtual roller coaster of a learning curve. Some days, I wondered if it was worth all the hard work, especially when going up against the publicity machines of larger houses. My day in Ohio reminded me why I wrote a book for teenagers in the first place. Not only was I treated like royalty – balloons, signs, that sweetheart with the candy bars! – but the students came prepared with in-depth questions about the book and we ended up in an incredible conversation about story, character, motivation. I was in author heaven: a whole school of students and teachers who had read my book and wanted to engage with it in such a meaningful way.

Thank you, Licking Valley High School. What proof that YA readers can be innovative, inspiring and engaged!!

41. Creating a Picture Book - "Mending Lucille"

LATEST: "Mending Lucille" is "Book of the Month" in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth - "Melbourne's Child" parenting magazine has made "Mending Lucille" their book of the month. Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth editions of the paper have followed suit.

The Highs and the Lows of Creating a Winning Picture Book


"Mending Lucille" written by J.R.Poulter & illustrated by Sarah Davis, Lothian/Hachette Livre, hb, 2008, ISBN 9780734410337:
The book has had the most amazing reception.
It sold out the first print run in its first week of release.
It was picked up by ASO.
Within its first fortnight has become a recommended book for counseling and biblio-therapy by Monash Medical Centre's Australian Centre for Grief Education and a site devoted to counselling parents/carers of children suffering the trauma of loss/bereavement.

The following story of the creation of "Mending Lucille" is based around a presentation Sarah & I were invited to give at SCWBI International Conference, Sydney, February 2008 - a huge honour for 2 relative newbies.

INSPIRATION
• First version written in one sitting – started with the first line ‘A raging and roaring and rolling in the sky like a storm –’ the next line came immediately I committed the 1st to paper. The whole story took less than 15 minutes to write.
• It was submitted to Lothian almost as an afterthought - they were looking for more humorous material at that time.
• Later submitted the 2nd version - more like a poem – this version wasn’t used.
• The story behind the story – can’t be told in its entirety, as it goes back generations and many folk affected are still alive. I was motivated to write by the pervading sense of loss and grief that hung, mist-like in the homes of relatives who had suffered terrible loss as children.

THE PROCESS
• The story was to have been released pre the Hachette/Lothian merger.
• Helen originally contracted Caroline Magerl to do the illustrations.
• I very much like Caroline’s work. My favourite example of her style and what I imagine she might have used for “Mending Lucille” was her utterly beautiful “Grandma’s Shoes”- see below:


















THE HUNT FOR AN ILLUSTRATOR
• After the takeover by Hachette, the pace quickened.

• I was sent an example of Leith Walton’s work. Couldn’t find the picture the publisher sent, which was very different to Caroline's work but still well executed. This is Leith’s submission for the ‘Book of Pi’ competition.














• Hachette decided against Leith for my particular project and the hunt was on for another illustrator. [Wonder what he’s doing now.]


• Jenny Gibson, art teacher/web designer, had submitted her portfolio. Jenny had done the humorous illustrations for my education series, “Poetry Action for Classroom and Stage”. This is one of her line drawings. Hachette decided against using her work for this particular project. [see more of Jenny's work: http://www.jennygibson.com ]













• At this stage, I asked Helen if I could “have a go at finding an illustrator”. Helen gave me my head!

MY SEARCH
• I Googled ‘illustrators’ specifying ‘pages from Australia’ – two sites came up worth checking. The SCBWI site was one.
• I found two artists – one on each site and contacted the sites. Sarah Davis was the artist I found on the SCWBI site. Site Coordinator, Susanne Gervay, responded to my enquiry almost immediately and sent me Sarah’s contact details. Susanne has been an enormously encouraging mentor to both Sarah and I and subsequently invited us to present our story of the book's creation at the SCWBI International Conference, Sydney February 2008.

MAKING CONTACT
• Rang Sarah and told her I had a contract with Lothian. Would she be interested in doing a couple of sketches for Helen? I couldn’t guarantee she would get the contract & I couldn’t pay her.
• Sarah loved the ms and submitted sketches. [ I got first peak within 48 ours.]
• I contacted Helen, my wonderful editor at Lothian. She was wary, Sarah not being a ‘known’ illustrator and pairing her with me, not exactly a ‘known’ myself! I was so excited at discovering Sarah that I didn't hesitate to say to Helen, ‘Sarah’s the one – just wait till you see the samples!’
• Helen loved the samples - the rest is history!

MORE CHALLENGES
• Sarah got underway with the illustrations, sending me updates - the two of us just gob smacked at how unified a vision we had of the book!
• This is an early picture Sarah sent me. It visualised a key element in the story, one Hachette now felt should be changed. The dead bird:

THE FURTHER EVOLUTION OF THE STORY
• The story was as originally written when Sarah started illustrating. However, at about the same time, Hachette took over Lothian.
• I was told I needed to eliminate any reference to or hint of ‘death’ from the text.
• This was no easy task as the dead bird symbol was one of the key elements to the story.
• I had seen the need for a story like Mending Lucille. So many children have been and are being left without one of their central carers/parents and popular opinion was always that the children were not affected adversely.
• Re death/bereavement: It was generally felt children ‘got over it’, ‘they were too young to be aware of what was happening’. Death's very finality allowed for recovery, for moving on, it gave a sense of closure.
• Re loss/abandonment: Of more devastating proportions for a child, however, is the loss of a parent on going - a parent's abandonment of the child. The general consensus was ‘it was better for the child than living in an unhappy home’ etc. There is no easy moving on from this type of loss because the parent is still alive somewhere...it is a profound loss, an inconsolable loss – it does not go away.

A CHANGE TO THE ORIENTATION
• I had used the reference to ‘death’ in relation to the bird to gentle the story down – the fate of the mother was to be deliberately left ‘open’. Whether literally dead or gone from the child’s life, she was effectively ‘dead’ to the child I was not looking at pros and cons – not looking for reasons why – this was the child’s story, from her perspective.
• Children are not generally told reasons and even of they are – they are too young to take them in – it is the loss that registers. The ‘unspeakable’ grieving – no one speaks to the child in a language he/she can understand about their loss till someone like Chrissie comes and starts to reach out to them at their level & so begin to console and mend the child.

THE PROBLEM
• I needed to find a way to still tell the story without compromise, but keep the publisher happy. I found a path through but fought for some of my more resonating text.
• I drafted changes and ran them by Sarah – would this still fit with her vision of the whole? Yes, Sarah could see how it could be interpreted visually!

BOLDER, BRAVER, BETTER!
• We both feel that what we now have, the final book, is a braver text, more controversial in ways, more honest! This is Sarah’s revised version of the bird and the rosebush:
