Store Feature - ThresholdPaperArt - http://www.etsy.com/shop/ThresholdPaperArt

Product - Paper Art, wall Art entitled Passionately Posies

About - I am a papermaker and artist. I'm the 'down home' type. It happens in my kitchen! This piece you see started its' life as paper pulp upcycled from other paper. When the pulp dries it leaves the cast designs you see.

Papermaking is a labor intensive process but one with great rewards. I have a passion for all that is unique and hand-made. I create one-of-a-kind pieces exploring themes such as faith and antiquity, utilizing embossing, embedding and casting techniques. The recurring theme is transformation. Even the paper I make goes through the process of being destroyed in its original plant form, only to be transformed into a work of art.

Support Handmade - This particular piece retails for $120, but products on her site start at just $25.  She said on the form that she'll give you a 10% discount if you saw it here, but she didn't give a coupon code so check with her first!

29. New American Girl Movie and Magazine

My daughter went and got the mail for me yesterday, and she came in with the newest American Girl Catalog and the most exciting news.  American Girl is releasing a new movie this summer, and it's going to be on NBC July 13th!

About - Saige Copeland™, American Girl’s popular 2013 Girl of the Year, comes to life in a new feature-length movie from Universal Studios Home Entertainment, An American Girl: Saige Paints the Sky. The movie, releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray on July 2 and airing Saturday, July 13, at 8/7C on NBC.

Nine-year old Saige is excited about the new school year until she discovers that art—her favorite class—has been cut. On top of that, her best friend, Tessa, is spending more and more time with another girl. For support, Saige turns to her grandma Mimi (Seymour), a well-known artist and horsewoman, who encourages her to take action and inspire her community in a fund-raising effort to start an after-school art program. Heartwarming, empowering, and fun, it’s a movie for every girl who has ever dreamed big.

My daughter was so excited about this.  She loves art and horses, and thinks Saige is just beautiful.  The only thing that would make it better, is if Saige also loved dolphins and reading, and looked like her.  (Sadly, none of their dolls do.)

She told me all about how it was on NBC, and was really concerned on if we have NBC or not. I assured her we did, and then we rushed down to record it on the DVR.

Also new from American Girl is the July/August Edition of the Magazine.

This issue features fun summer projects, crafts, and stories.  It also has posters that can be torn out and used to decorate a room (including a dolphin picture Kik is in love with).

I'm always hesitant about magazine subscriptions because I don't know how long it will hold my daughters interest.  If you've thought about getting the American Girl Magazine, but don't want to buy a subscription, you can now order a single edition on the American Girl Webpage.

Opinions expressed in this post are strictly my own - I was not influenced in any way. I received no compensation for this post.  We just like American Girl.

31. Agent Feature: Stephen Fraser from the Jennifer DeChiara Literary Agency

I had the opportunity to attend the Writers and Illustrators for Young Readers (WIFYR) Conference a few weeks ago.  It was my first writers conference, and a great experience.

One of my favorite things about the conference, was the chance I had to interview Literary Agent Stephen Fraser from the Jennifer DeChiara Literary Agency.   I've done agent features before, but I loved hearing his responses first hand.   He was inspiring, approachable, funny, and a super nice guy.

Agent Stephen Fraser from the Jennifer DeChiara Literary Agency

#1 - Are you open to Submissions: Yes, I'm open to Submissions.  I mean I have about 40 something  clients, but I would never say no if I found something that I was just entranced with.

#2 - What Book(s) made you fall in love with reading?: Let's see.  One of my favorite books of all time is Peter Pan.  Wen I was 10 that's really when I became a voracious reader, and I read everything.  I read Charles Dickens, and Shakespeare, probably not understanding it but I just loved the words.  I love The Secret Garden or anything by Frances Hodgson Burnett.  I grew up with A. Milne and Beatrix Potter and all of the great British writers.  But I think Peter Pan was probably my favorite book.  And I also loved the Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain.  Those are my two favorite favorite books.

#3 - What is your Favorite Book Now?: I read constantly so it's hard to say.  I love my clients books.  I would say the Clockwork Three by Matthew Kirby is one of my favorite favorite books.  I also like Icefall by Matt Kirby that one the Edgar Award this year, anything Carol Williams has ever written, and Holes by Louis Sachar.  I like a lot of writers, but I suppose my favorite book is anything I'm reading at the moment.

#4 - What categories do you represent?: I do everything from board books, picture books, chapter books, middle grade, and YA.  I have a very eclectic list, but because we're a small agency I can do anything I want.  So I do a little bit of everything.

#5 - Is there anything you wish would come through your inbox?: Dazzle me.  Send me something dazzling.  I love a great picture book text, it's all about the language.  I have a soft spot for middle grade, so a great middle grade story - it can be historical, it can be fantasy, or contemporary.  I think Middle Grade kids are the strongest and most loyal readers, so whatever is going to capture their attention.

#6 - Do you have any Pet Peeves for Authors to Avoid?:  I don't like really smart-alecky language.  Because of video games, and TV, and movies, there's kind of a sophisticated smart-alecky lingo.  I don't really like that. When something is in print, you're kind of giving immortality to it, and I think the language should be more dignified.  That probably sounds old-fashioned, but written language is different than a movie script.  And I think when you're writing a book for kids I don't like things that are snarky and have bathroom humor.  I know that it is wildly popular, but I would not put my name to a book that I was embarrassed about the title.  That's something I don't like.

#7 - Is there anything specific you look for in a query letter?: In a query letter there needs to be a good elevator pitch.  I need to know the age level and the format, a sense of the story, and sort of a comparison.  I like to know who is someone the author connects with, or what's a classic or best selling book that gives a context for this book.  I need to know whether someone has been published, or where they are in their career.  I don't mind if someone has never been published, but I like to know who they are.  I don't need to know someones marital or dating status.  I don't need to know personal things about the author.  That's not necessary.

#8 - How many Queries do you receive a week?: I get 50 queries literally every morning, and then it continues throughout the day.

#9 - Is it okay for an author to do a follow-up?:  I insist on it.  I say don't wait any longer than a month, and then  keep following up till you get an answer, because I answer everybody.  But if you don't get an answer either its lost in cyber-space or just buried.  But I insist everyone follow up and keep following up,  not just once but multiple times till you get an answer.  It's not being intrusive or obnoxious, it's just part of being a professional writer.

#10 - Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?:  You become a professional writer the second you start behaving professionally.  Like with the query, follow up in a month.  Make a record of where you send things and when.  Be courteous to the agent or editor.  Be respectful.  I think publishing is all about image so it's how you present yourself.  Be conscious of how you present yourself to the world.

You can find him:

32. Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated Season 2 Part 2: Spooky Stampede

Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated is by far my favorite Scooby-Doo show ever.  We watch all of the episodes on tv, but I love when they come out on DVD - especially when I get a chance to review them.

Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated centers onFred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo, who solve mysteries in the spooky town of Crystal Cove, a sleepy coastal village that boasts a long history of ghostly sightings, werewolves and glowing deep sea divers. Because of all the paranormal activity, Crystal Cove has become a tourist hotspot that capitalizes on its haunted reputation and the gang's meddling is therefore not appreciated by the people of Crystal Cove. Executive produced by Sam Register, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated draws on the iconic look and feel of the original Scooby-Doo! series and is presented in a modernized visual style created by some of today's leading animation artists.

Episodes Include -

1. The Heart of Evil - the gang, Blue Falcon and Dynomutt team up to stop a giant dragon robot
2. Theater of the Doomed - historical re-enactment gone wrong
3. Aliens Among Us - the gang is chased through a cave by extraterrestrials
4. The Horrible Herd - the gang is haunted by a herd of mutated skull cattle at a ranch
5. Dance of the Undead
6. The Devouring - a monster appears in the middle of a cooking show
7. Stand and Deliver
8. The Man in the Mirror
9. Nightmare in Red
10. Dark Night of the Hunters
11. Gates of Gloom
12. Through the Curtain
13. Come Undone

To Buy - Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated - Spooky Stampede retails for $19.96, but you can get it right now on Amazon for $12.96.

33. Orb Factory Review

Kik loves art projects, but I struggle a bit in the artsy department.  School has been great for her this year because she has brought home some kind of art project almost every week.   But now that the kids are out for the summer, it's up to me to find something for them to do every day - or at least every week.

We got some drawing books from the library, but Bid can't do it, and I am more of a hindrance than a help.

Because of this I jumped at the chance to check out some of Orb Factory's newest crafty projects.

I broke the Sticky Mosaics Unicorn Keepsake Boxes out during a play date with one of Kik's friends.

This particular kit contains three little treasure unicorn boxes, and 400 little jewels and tiles.  That seems a bit daunting, but the boxes are all stick by number, and you just have to put on the right color.  If you look eat the above pictures, you can see the numbers on the boxes.

The 3 girls just sat there at a table and quietly worked on their boxes for more than an hour.  It was seriously the quietest and most low key play date my girls have ever had.  And at the end we had these -

To Buy - The Sticky Mosaic Unicorn Keepsake Boxes retail for $14.99 (includes all 3 styles) and is recommended for ages 5+.  The little jewels are little so it could be hard for younger kids to do it themselves.  Bid is 4 and she stuck hers on by herself, but she needed lots of help with color matching.  Plus, she has fat fingers.  The project was perfect for my first grader and her friend.

If you need project for older kids (or even boys) Orb Factory has those too. One I love is the Superstar Pillow.

You actually create the design of the pillow using fabric pieces (number guided of course).  This pillow retails for $19.99, and even better there is no sewing required.

All of the products I've used from Orb Factory have been kid friendly, and easy to use.  If you are looking for a great craft for your kids, I would definitely check this out.   For more info on these and other great products, check out the orb factory facebook page

34. I wrote a book, now to get it published - Defender Elementary: A New Hero in Town

I've been a little MIA on here lately, but not because I'm deserting you.  For the last few years, I've indulged my love of writing by sharing great products with all of you, but this year I decided I wanted to try and write a book.  So with all of my free time in February, I went for it.

Since kids books are my favorite, I decided to write a humorous chapter book about Super Heroes for 6-9 year old boys.  As of a few days ago, my book is finished!

In Defender Elementary: A New Hero in Town, Evan Armstrong is a seemingly ordinarily boy that is actually descended from a long line of Super Heroes.  The week before Evan’s 9th birthday his whole life is turned upside down when the evil Dr. Roboto breaks into his school, and his powers start to develop (Well, kind of).

In the Defender Elementary Series, every Super, hero and villain, share the same weakness – Pickles.  My book differs from the norm here, because Evan was accidentally introduced to pickles before his powers developed, and pickles no longer hurt him.  Unfortunately, his powers don’t work quite right either.  Instead of being invisible he can only turn slightly blurry, and instead of telekinesis he can just make things shake.    Despite his limited powers, Evan figures out the identity of Dr. Roboto and informs the Supers in charge.  But no one believes him.  So when Dr. Roboto disguises himself as Miss Pennywiggle and poisons everyone at the Super Hero Convention with a pickle juice infused cake, Evan is the only Super whose powers are not affected.  Evan and a few other soon-to-be supers, join together to catch Dr. Roboto and lock him away for good.

I enjoyed writing the book so much that in the little time I've  had, I've wrote a picture book called Stinking Beauty, and started the 2nd book in the Defender Elementary Series.

Now I just have to submit it to a whole bunch if literary agencies and see if anyone is interested.   I've read about the process, and it seems long and daunting.  If there are any writers, agents, or publishers out there, I would love to have you answer a few short questions.  I'm thinking of starting a new weekly feature about the publishing process, and would love an insiders point of view.

37. Puppet Monster Review + a Giveaway

A couple of year ago, we bought my daughters a doorway puppet theater for Christmas.  They love putting on shows and making up stories,  but as Bid is only 3, she struggles a bit.  It takes her a long time to switch between puppets, and she can never make them work right.  They just sort of bob up and down until they fall off of her hand.  Because of this, I was super excited when I saw the new Puppet Monsters

Basically, Puppet Monsters are interchangeable puppets you wear on your head.  To use all you do is put the puppet monster on your head, and slip your finger in it's hand.

Currently there are 6 styles - Silly Dragon, Dizzy Antlers, Big Beak, Twinkley Eyes, Jumbo Eyes or Mr. Mustache

When I saw the Dizzy Antlers Monster, I knew it was for me.  I love the bright colors and crazy look of the monster, and knew my kids would love it too.

And I was right.  They are super easy to use, and my kids incorporated them into their puppet shows right away.

Here's why we love them -

  • Easy to Use -
  • Double Use - Puppet and Stylish Hat
  • Machine Washable - enough said
  • Parts Interchangeable between all styles - just flip the monster inside out and switch ALL parts at will

To Buy - A Puppet Monster retails for just $19.95 from buypuppetmonsters.com.  In addition to the individual Puppet Monsters, there are 6 different accessory kits that are available for just $6.95 each.

To Win - Puppet Monsters are giving away your choice of Puppet Monster to one of you.

40. American Girl Magazine 20th Birthday & Cover Contest

Most people know about the American Girl Dolls and character books, but what they don't know is American Girl has a whole line of products perfect for young girls.  Today I want to tell you about two of them.

This year, American Girl Magazine is celebrating it's 20th birthday!

They are kicking off this year long celebration with a special January/February 2013 issue that is devoted to all of the girls that made the past 20 years so special.

My favorite thing about the magazine, is that it is completely age appropriate for young girls.  There are no inappropriate images, or stories.  And it's all about fostering the creativity and individuality of each girl.

The Jan/Feb 2013 special edition is super fun.  It features pictures of how the American Girl readers look now vs. then, and there is page after page of fun birthday party ideas.  Kik has had a lot of fun flipping through the magazine and planning her birthday party.

Something else fun included in this episode, is a contest to be on the cover of the November/December 2013 issue.

To Buy - Jan/Feb issue retails for $4.99, or you can also subscribe to the whole year on the American Girl Website.

I received a product to review from the above company or their PR Agency. Opinions expressed in this post are strictly my own - I was not influenced in any way. I received no monetary compensation for this post.

41. I wrote a book - now to get it published

In A New Hero in Town, Evan Armstrong grew up thinking he was from a normal family, in a town where nothing ever happens.  What Evan doesn’t know is that he is actually descended from a long line of Super Heroes, with a very strange weakness – Pickles.    The week before Evan’s 9thbirthday his whole life is turned upside down when the evil Dr. Roboto breaks into his school and Evan’s powers start to develop.  Well kind of.  Due to an unfortunate pickle incident, his powers never seem to work quite right.  Can Evan use his limited powers to save the day?  Or will Dr. Roboto find a way to defeat the Supers for good?

Now I just have to submit it to a whole bunch if literary agencies and see if anyone is interested.   I've read about the process, and it seems like a daunting and long process.  If anyone has any tips, I would love to hear them!

Store Feature - thevicagirl - http://thevicagirl.etsy.com

About -  I enjoy creating beauty from everyday objects. You might see something and only see this mundane in it, but I see something more powerful. I enjoy every time that I make a piece that turns out to be unrecognizable to then hear those around me wonder, not if I made it, but what unusual thing it is. And then the joy that is felt when they as well see the beauty that is in the object that they have seen many times before but never cared to really see it.

Most of my items are either found as I go about my day either on the ground or in the garbage. Some are from items I have had that have become obsolete. However, the main jewelry findings, such as the claps, earrings studs, and most of the chains, are either bought from a trusted findings dealer, or made myself. I am always trying to find ways to make the jewelry out of more sustainable products than they already are.

47. MakeABall + a Baseball Giveaway

If you need a great gift idea for the sports fan in your life, check out Make-A-Ball.

At Make-A-Ball, you can actually design and personalize your own ball.

When I first heard about it, I was a little unsure about how it would work, but it was actually pretty cool.  A couple of years ago, Kik played tball and she got the cutest baseball head trophy.  Which her little sister soon broke.  We couldn't fix it, but I thought that this could be the perfect thing to take its place.

The first step is to choose a ball.  You can pick from baseballs, softballs, basketballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, footballs, or even hockey pucks.  We choose a baseball of course.

Then you choose a layout and background pictures.  They have tons of pictures on the sidebar that are designed with your sport in mind.  All you have to do is click the picture, and then line it up using the guide.

Then you can upload and add in your own pictures or text.  A lot of the backgrounds have spaces for pictures, which makes it super easy to use.  After all was said and done, we ended up with this

It's hard to tell because I took the picture on my phone, but the colors are bright and vibrant and the quality is pretty good.

I surprised my daughter with the ball when she got home from school today.  She put her hand over her heart, and said thank you so much for making this for me.  I love it.  and then my 3 year old told me that she can't wait to play tball so she can get one too.

To Buy - You can make your own baseball for just $25 on makeaball.com.  If you have a sports lover in your life, it's really a great way to show them your love this February.  And just for you, you can get 20% off your order for a limited time with code mab.20.ref

To Win - Make-A-Ball is giving one of you the chance to make your own baseball!

49. Jewelry from QVC

A great gift idea for Valentines Day is jewelry from QVC.  The thing I love best about QVC is the huge selection.  From simple charms, to personalized pieces, they have necklaces, rings, and everything in between.

For my guide I received a Sterling Diamond Accented Love Necklace

Which sadly for all of you, they completely sold out of.

The necklace was only $35, so I wouldn't have a problem giving it yo my daughter as a gift.  Yet it still looks elegant so it  would be a great option for a jewelry gift idea on a budget.

To Buy - The great thing about the huge selection on QVC.com, is there is a lot of selection in every price range.  It really allows you to pick the perfect piece for your loved one.
