1. Making Iddy-Biddy Art

After years of creating Cut Paper Children's books, magazines and advertisements, I have ended up with a closet stuffed to the brim with boxes of cut paper art.

Along with these whole pieces of art I end up with little bits that I can't just throw out! So I have started making itty-bitty works of art that I place in tiny frames 6 1/2 x 4 1/4.

I am having a wee bitty sale on Thursday evening at 3:00 pm at my studio. I will also be at T.C. Scoops in Medway our local Ice Cream Parlor for a special arts and crafts night.
Or contact me for any thing you like.
[email protected] Subject Minis

Here are examples of framed and unframed art for size. So cute and fun to assemble. All original one of a kind cut paper minis!

4. Designer Hens

I love working with Designer fabrics for my little pincushion/paperweight hens.

These two hens are very special to me as they are made of material designed by my talented friend Nicole Tamarin.

I created these two pretty girls for the designer. The green and pink is named "Nicole- Skilled and Classy". The blue is named "Tamarin- Talented and Stylish".

"Nicole" hen is available at 5 Crows Gallery in Natick. I have a couple of Tamarins roosting in my studio soon to go up on Etsy.  Although no two birds are alike the fabric will be the same.

I adore my #HerdOfHens each one is a thrill to see finished.

9. A Herd of Hens

Lately I've had my antique sewing machine repaired and I've been sewing up a storm. A storm of chicks and hens. Mesmerized by the selection of beautiful fabrics, I can't seem to stop making these little cuties. There are so may designer fabrics and color combinations I adore!
After searching the Internet for the perfect pattern, I came up with my own version of the pin cushion chick, that can also serve as a paper weight, or a pretty adornment for the abode.
These are my smaller chicks. After trying various beaks I've settled on a favorite. Here the chicks are posing in Mandala formation.
My1940's Singer Featherweight goes forward and back, and that's all I need. Isn't it beautiful?

11. Colorists/Coloring Books

A Coloring Book artist's finished works are only as good as the colorists that complete them!

I got a lovely surprise when Sue Deignan emailed me this page from my book "Merry Mandalas". The piece is called "Going Buggy"and I am delighted by the artful way she finished this Mandala. The colors are fabulous and beautifully blended. The highlights on the leaves, wings and center flowers give the page energy.

Thank you Sue for making Going Buggy look so good!

PS I'll be at the Norfolk Library on July 12 from 7-8 Pm teaching coloring techniques with my new "Cut and Color Cards".  Come join me if you're local!

12. Purple and Prince

As some of you may know, purple  is my absolute favorite color. I wandered about the garden and took a few shots this morning.

Outside my studio on the farmers porch I painted a little gourd where the Carolina Wrens have nested for years.

The lilacs are miniatures that come into bloom following the standard darker purple variety...that I have lots of.

And the beautiful Clematis curls up around my lamp post in the front yard.

Aha purple!
The giant iris are so much fun to watch unfurl every year. I have two varieties of large rhododendron. One a bit more on the pink side.

The flower on the upper right...well I don't know what that is. I got it as a freebie at a nursery when I bought a bunch of flowers.

Purple also makes me think of Prince lately. An incredible musician I followed very closely in the 80's. I will never forget the concert my sister and I attended to see Prince and his band the Revolution...adorned in purple of course.

RIP Prince!

13. Weston Presentation #18

Joanne Simmon, one of the originals!
I cut and draw ideas for each classroom
This year marks my 18th year of presentations at the fabulous Field School in Weston. It is a bitter sweet year, as it is the first time the man who made up the other half of this program passed away suddenly this fall.

The very clever, funny, Jeff Kelley had been coming to the school (long before I started) to teach the 4th graders how to write a story about themselves. Then I'd follow and teach the kids how to illustrate their stories in cut paper. We were a team, and he is greatly missed.

This has been a successful program that we all look forward to each year. It wraps up the school year for teachers, authors, artists and kids with a wonderful product; a bound book written and illustrated by each and every 4th grader. What an accomplishment!

Joanne Simmon is one of the talented teachers that I've known for all 18 years.Their are eight great teachers at the helm of this fourth grade ship.

The sewn animals were done in Margaret Allards class. Mrs. Allard is another one of the original teachers I met all those years ago.

Margaret Allard's 4th grade class sewing project...adorable!

15. Surtex 2016

Nicole Tamarin from our FAN group got a great break at this years Surtex show. This is the fabulous display she designed, built and filled with amazing art for her 5th year at the show.

Two other FAN (Freelance Artists Network) had work at this years show. Lesley Breen Withrow (adorable bags and much more), and Lisa Graves with "Parcai Designs" (Lets be Fancy line).

Susan Novich and I walked the show, visited our friends and gathered inspiration.

I met Susan Coccia who's wonderful art and coloring books I have admired.

There were sooo many coloring books and posters the show!

16. Art School Now them and Now.

This is not Halloween. This was my favorite fall look in art school. Long black velvet cape for warmth, with turtle neck velvet mini and tights. s artists we needed to stand out from the crowd.
In high school I was known as "Cutesie Judy". Starting life anew I  I wanted to look mysterious.  I painted one of my pieces in blood and tried serious subjects avoiding cute at all costs!
Joseph Sullivan with his final project.
Fast forward 2016. My godson Joey is in his first year of art school with a serious subject for his final project; called "Guernica take two" after Picasso's work of the same name, created to elicit a common reaction of horror from the viewer.

"My whole life as an artist has been nothing more than a continuous struggle against reaction and the death of art. In the picture I am painting — which I shall call Guernica — I am expressing my horror of the military caste which is now plundering Spain into an ocean of misery and death." Pablo Picasso

Joey choose to fill a 126 page sketchbook with 30 days of exploring and recording the violence of humanity. Pretty serious stuff for a first year. Well done godson!

He writes:"It is east to see the physical pain we impose on ourselves as a species, all it takes is a google search, but it's much harder to see the damage that happens inside of us as individuals."

It brought me back to my days in art school with all the wild hair and outfits at the student's art opening. Below is one last shot of two of Joey's class mates with part of their colorful final projects.

17. Portsmouth Fabric Company

I have been wanting to visit this incredible shop for a few months now. I've ogled the fabrics on the Internet, but nothing beats actually feeling the quality of the cloth.

On a trip to Newburyport MA, we went a bit farther north to take in the legendary store.

So quaint and filled to the brim with the most beautiful fabrics!  Mom, sister and I had a grand time looking, touching and then leaving with a few gems.

The shop girl tells me this store is one of  three stores with the largest selection of Kaffee Fasset's fabrics in stock. Portsmouth Fabric Company has made beautiful selections of fabrics that go together that they sell in sets.

It's in a picturesque old building not far from the water in downtown Portsmouth. So many fabulous stores and restaurants to check out on a warmer weekend. We will go back!

If you go and want to get a cup of hot cup or tea or coffee served by a mermaid with many shades of blue hair, try Kaffee VonSolln a block away.

18. Digital Sketching

I've been playing around with my IPAD Mini making little digital sketches in "notes" that comes on the newer devices. For two mornings I've made these observations, while sipping my morning tea. Here are some of my favorite things; On the left is my chicken bank, teacup timer, candle and cup. On the right is Tinkerbell trying to keep warm. We've had rain and cold weather here for 8 days! Not what I hope for in May.

19. Art in Bloom at MFA

Rainy day outside, but a blooming burst of color and excitement inside at Art In Bloom in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. A fabulous festival of art and flowers that has been going on for 40 years! Scattered all through the galleries, garden clubs have created 52 beautiful floral arrangements to complement and reflect a particular piece of art in the museum. A sight to behold!

In my opinion here are a few of the best works where the arrangements reflects the look and feel of the artwork.

See the red lilies representing the long red heads on the arms of the chair?

The beads on the dress and flowers are cool. The vase on the right is perfect.
Colors and shape working.
Plastic bags from the Mega City exhibit.

Two of Lawren Harris's works from another exhibit...LOVE!

20. Mandala Workshop Results

I met with the 20 ladies that were on retreat with their minister at the dinning hall, situated at the end of the quaint little village of Craigville.

We walked back to the Manor; a large antique house that sat atop a bluff overlooking the sand beach and ocean...beautiful setting!

Here are some of the mandalas from my afternoon workshop.

Along with regular colored pencils we used watercolor pencils and pastel pencils. The pastel pencils are antiques..."Prismapastels"... love the case.

22. Your model is closer than you think!

I've been trying to imagine how to fit a cat into a circular shape for a new design I'm working on.

I made page after page of sketches and nothing was quite right.

One morning when I was sipping my tea, I looked down at the sunny patch on the floor, and there was Tinkerbell posing for me!

I got lots of shots as she joyously wriggled on her back on the well designed round rug in the sunlight!

Presently I'm teaching part of an illustration course at Rhode Island school of Design. To help my students with some of their difficult compositions, I've been preaching "look at life or take a photo!"

Sometimes real life is a better inspiration than what you can't quite imagine in your head.

Thank you Tinkerbell.

24. Pineapple Pie for Easter and Tea.

Two things I love, make that Three: Spring, Tea parties and Pineapple pie.

Yesterday I started my afternoon with a tea party for two that grew into tea for four (thank goodness I made FOUR scones!

I was thrilled with how all the colors came together including the bouquet from my guest.

Next thing was to get the pie crust made for the ever popular Pineapple pie that I make once a year for Easter. The recipe is so simple and the results...yummy.

I got the recipe from my aunt Janet in 1987 and have been baking the pie ever since.

Janets Pineapple Pie:

20 ounce can crushed Pineapple
1/3 Cup sugar
2 Tablespoons Flour
1 Egg

Mix these all togeter pour them in a pie shell, pop on a pie crust top then pierce top with sharp knife.
Bake at 375 for 35-40 minutes, until edges of shell brown a bit.

That's it!
I like to sprinkle mine with large sugar crystals before baking.

Tinkerbell photo bombing the flowers AFTER the party is over!

Happy Easter everyone!

25. Books at the Beach

Just dropped of some coloring books and posters at  Curiosity and Mischief in Narragansett RI.

This sweet little store is walking distance from the beach that carries gifts, books and lots of awesome greeting cards.

Decorated in pleasing shades of aqua, the store is nestled in with a selection of interesting shops at 4A Pier Marketplace.

Please note, there is a big comfy chair for the person shopping with you in need of a rest!
At low tide there is a sandy beach covered with cool rocks by the water. I love a walk on the beach and couldn't help but pick up a few little treasures for my collection of special rocks...Oh and a nice little nubbin of sea glass!

Beautiful old house not far from the beach. Great color on the trim!
