About Judy
One of Judy Young’s earliest memories of writing was a poem she wrote for her grandmother when she was about ten. Her grandmother encouraged her to keep writing, and Judy did! Judy Young is the author of children’s fiction, poetry and nonfiction and her books have received numerous awards and honors.
Judy received her MA in Speech and Language Pathology from the University of Tulsa and worked in the public schools for 20 years. She frequently used poetry writing in both special language classes and in the regular classroom to help children improve their writing skills. Judy feels “the genre of poetry is the perfect place to teach a variety of writing conventions. Its shorter form enables students to be immediately successful, and the concepts learned during poetry writing can easily be generalized to prose.” In 2004, Judy left the schools to fulfill her dream of writing full-time but continues to have a direct impact on the education of children. Judy is a frequent speaker at schools, libraries, young author lit fests and professional educational conferences nationwide. Her first-hand experience in the schools makes her programs not only entertaining, but directly related to school curriculum.
Judy resides in the country near Springfield, MO, with her husband, Ross, a professional artist who illustrated Judy’s Show Me books. They have a grown daughter and son and several dogs. When not writing, visiting schools or speaking at conferences, you can find Judy reading, hiking, fishing, or gallivanting around the country in “Arlo,” the Young’s traveling studio.
