I've been an aspiring children's writer for nigh on two decades, and am still learning how much there is to be learned.
A textbook entry could probably be written about the phases I've gone through; like, "I'll do picture books, they're nice and short," then "Wait, middle grade novels allow more space for descriptions and characters," then "Can't market those, let's try magazines."
Meanwhile, or as proof that it's not the destination but the journey, I've gotten into audio production while writing kids stories for a startup, www.talltalesaudio.com.
And my day job keeps my writing muscles exercised, as an author/editor of adult nonfiction at Nolo in Berkeley (www.nolo.com).
Someday I hope to write a kid's book about Halloween, my favorite holiday. (Note giant pumpkin in photo; I won it by guessing the weight.)
