He hollows out a tree befriends a falcon, weasel, and raccoon and makes a home in the wilderness. Boys and girls can live out their fantasy of escaping the strictures of being under their parent’s roof in civilization George plunks the reader down in the woods with Sam. He shares the experience of learning how to survive off of the land by his wits. The forest comes alive and Sam’s and his animal friends become the reader’s friends. They are made to feel part of the adventure. The tale is at once funny and intense. On his quest he exerts his desire for independence and freedom from the bustling of civilization. I highly recommend this book.
