When Jessica wakes up at midnight and discovers the world is frozen and raindrops are suspended in midair she assumes she is dreaming. She soon learns that this is no dream. The darklings (monsters) that appear during the midnight hour are unsettled by Jessica. Rex reads the lore, Melissa reads people’s minds and Dess is a numerical genius. Jonathan, Jessica’s lover boy can fly in the midnight hour. The kids work together to find Jessica’s talent. All of the kids, but Jonathan can use their powers in real time. That bugged me. I didn’t understand why. Also to learn Jessica’s talent they had to spill some of her blood on a rock. How did they know to do that? Who cares? The book’s imagery is wildly imaginative. The twists and turns of the plot kept me guessing. The book was a great read.
