The storyline is not very clear to me, but I feel because one needs every color to make black that is why blackbird was chosen as the most beautiful. There is a little bit of rhyming here and there, but it is not consistent throughout. It sends a message that we all have differences, but we are made of the same stuff. Also, that we are more beautiful when we learn about and embrace our differences for the positive improvement of each other. Commentary on Art: The illustrations are done in collage, full color, two page spreads. The colors are an essential part of this story. There is every color in the rainbow and varying hues for those colors. There are all different kinds of bird cutouts to represent the different species. There are lines to show horizons, depth, water currents, texture, and beams of light. An interesting fact is that they were created with the author/illustrator’s mother’s fabric scissors.
