The children and Miss Clavel, the teacher, search for her on the streets and want her to stay even if is she is not allowed. The text is quite gloomy at first with words like death and watery grave, but the rhyming and mood lightens as the book progresses. Commentary on Art: The illustrations are created with pen and watercolors. The pen defines the watercolors borders and allows a clearer view of the scene. Some of the pictures are in color and others in yellow, white, and black only. All the illustrations are in square boxes above the text. There is a lot of negative yellow space in the tricolored illustrations. The focus is on the action. There are hints that the story takes place in another country like the French flag, the architecture, and the famous people that are buried in a cemetery they searched.
