He takes her to see Mayan ruins and ultimately tells her the legend of Muluc, a girl who lived in the time of the Ancient Maya. The world in which Muluc lives is dangerous and mysterious, full of rivalry, betrayal, and sacrifice. As Muluc's story unfolds, Kat begins to make connections to her own world at school, which leads her to wonder if all the sacrificing she does just to be popular is worth it.
