Mardor said: All of Irving's fiction remains, for me, some of the best in contemporary American literature. I picked this one, but I could easily have picked any one of his other titles, including THE WATER-METHOD MAN (easily his funniest novel ever, and a favorite), A SON OF THE CIRCUS (a structurally complicated, well-written, under-valued later novel) and UNTIL I FIND YOU (which features one of Irving's best realized protagonists). As a writer who has addressed themes like feminism, terrorism, abortion, religion, war and politics and the cult of celebrity (all while delving into more important issues like death, love, parenthood, etc), Irving may one day be seen as one of 20th century America's most important scribes. tags: Inspired me |
