I'm no fan of Ulysses or Finnegan's Wake which I think are both highly over-rated and pretentious. Dubliners is a series of short stories about people living in Dublin, Ireland in the early 20th century but it's a timeless work and one can relate to and understand every character one meets in the pages. My favorite piece is the last one, The Dead, which I think is one of the greatest stories written in any language anywhere at any time in the history of the world.
