CarryUsOff said: Alice Rumphius followed her grandfather's dreams of travelling the world, living by the sea and doing one thing to make the world more beautiful. She met kind people, rode camels in exotic countries, had adventures and returned home older, her health more fraile. She then chose to live and recuperate by the sea.
Yet these were not all it was to her life.
There was one more dream to fulfill: To make the world more beautiful.
(I'm not sure I ought to ruin anyone's reading pleasure by revealing the ending here. Hence.)
...
I would love to live as Miss Rumphius did. (I'd love to live by the sea and contribute one thing to the world, too.)
The soft paintings and humble tone carried the strength and colours of this character with quiet dignity. I haven't read a picture book that swept me like this has. Not quite sure children will enjoy this as much as adults. Still, it's an outstanding story with mighty pictures. (Its might lies in softness.) I'd buy and keep it for as long as I live. tags: I read, Inspired me, I recommend |
