Anika said: Based on descriptions, I thought I would love this book. I am glad that so many people are impressed, but it is not quite what I expected. I think, maybe the way it is told would work as a good read aloud because the way the author uses language reminds me of the voice of an oral storyteller. With an excellent storyteller, I can imagine myself enjoying the story for its myth-like plot and expressive use of words. But as a "silent." adult reader, I just did not find it appealing. The illustratiions by David Small are lovely.
I guess my opinion of this book is a matter of taste. While I can appreciate its merits, it is not a book I would want to read again nor would I want to read it aloud to children. We can all be grateful that readers of all ages have a wide range of tastes, so we authors are kept busy creating all sorts of stories. tags: I read |
