orourke said: This is an engrossing read. Collins has created a retrograde world of a future America, which has followed on some unnamed societal disaster. A central government, the Capitol, has put down rebellions across the country, and all citizens are now organized into twelve geographic Districts, with each District responsible for producing some specialized commodity needed by the country at large. The main character, a young girl named Katniss, lives in a coal mining district, and is something of a rebel, often sneaking outside her fenced district to hunt for game with a friend. Each year the Capitol dictates that each district send a male and a female participant for the 'Hunger Games,' held in the Capitol. The games require lethal combat among the gladiators, until only one is left and is declared the winner. Combatants, or gladiators, really, have an electronic chip embedded in an arm so that the entire citizenry can watch their exploits on TV throughout the period of the game. Katniss is a cool, low emotions character and Collins is very inventive in devising some 'over-the-top ordeals introduced by the Capitol's game makers, as well as for the individual combats of the participants. Something for every reader here, boys and girls, young adults, and older.
