If you have an insatiable appetite for learning about animals from aardvarks to zebras--as well as plants, habitats, rocks, shells, clouds, and all the other marvelous components of the natural world--and you also get a kick out of wordplay, we might have a few things in common.

I love natural history and science, and I love to write about topics in these areas. I enjoy getting kids excited about these subjects, too--or rather, building on their inherent interest in them.

I also love strange facts (the stranger the better--I wrote the feature "True--But Strange" for Kid City magazine for many years in the late 1980s and early '90s)...creating word puzzles and activities, and writing about close-to-home topics such as everyday objects and how they work; the 50 states; places to visit that kids will enjoy; traditions associated with holidays and cultures; and offbeat festivals and other events. Recently I've also enjoyed writing biographies for young readers.

I've been writing for children on such topics since 1986. In my career, I've also worked as an editor at The Children's Television Workshop and The Wright Group. I've served as a docent at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle and produced a newsletter for an elementary-school PTA.Though I loved the hurly-burly of New York City, I've been a happy resident of the Pacific Northwest since 1989. Great coffee, bald eagles flying over one's house, orcas on view from the local ferry, bookstores galore, and Archie McPhee's novelty store--what's not to like?

Other things I love: cooking, baking, gardening, birding, horseback riding, drawing, crafting, camping throughout the Pacific NW and visiting national parks, beachcombing, Scrabble, and just hanging out with family and friends.
