Annie Pearce, Wizard Guard, a magical police officer, stared at the dead body sprawled on the forest floor. It was odd that he wore leather shoes and of all things a traditional wizard's cloak to hike in the forest on a cold and wet spring morning. But what bothered Annie the most, was that he was dumped just outside the portal to the Black Market.

His death led her and her partner to investigate the market itself, a seedy, dangerous place where the Wizard Guard was not welcome. There Annie would find her greatest ally, an unkempt, dirty elf named Bitherby, who would try her patience and offer his services for nothing more than his freedom.

The dead man carried his secrets with him, an ancient artifact he took great care to hide and protect. The artifact leads Annie down a perilous path, as she discovered her dead body was deeply linked to the past, her past and his murder was the catalyst that in the end could destroy the thin veil between the magical and non-magical worlds.
