The year is 1983, and the Cold War between America and the Soviet Union is escalating again. But in the small Soviet town of Belsk, a young Russian named Maxim Lapin has other things on his mind, things of more pressing concern to a boy in the seventh grade.

Maxim has a crush on a girl, Tanya Nosova, who is too ambitious and independent to respond to his advances. Meanwhile, he and his friends are being bullied by a gang of older boys, led by angry Tolik Smirnov. Maxim tries to solve these two big problems but without success. He�s too afraid of the sight of his own blood to stand up to Tolik and his gang.

Maxim likes listening to stories of courage told by his grandfather, who had fought the Nazi invasion in World War II. With these new insights, will Maxim find a way to solve both of his problems - at once?
