Tlocan, a male golden eagle in the summer of his second year, likes to explore the borders of his parents� home range in the hills and canyons of the American Southwest. However, this particular warm, sunny day gives birth to a powerful thunderstorm, and its strong winds push him into the nearby territory of another eagle, who sees him and flies to attack. Caught in the violent forces of the storm, Tlocan loses the use of one wing and one eye in a cataclysmic accident, and becomes stranded in this unfamiliar landscape, far from his home and family. Crippled, half-blinded, and at risk of further harm, Tlocan is surprised by the appearance of a creature he has never encountered, an elder animal patriarch of the high desert wildlands, who turns out to be as great a hunter as Tlocan. When this singular wise one helps Tlocan out of immediate danger, a bond of friendship is formed that brings new experiences and understanding to each of them.
