Joao lives in a sanctuary in South Africa. He is one of the oldest known chimps in captivity. He tells the sad story of how he was taken from his family and sold to a circus, ultimately to sit in a small cage at a zoo for more than 50 years. Now Joao has been rescued and lives in the Chimp Eden sanctuary as part of the Jane Goodall Institute of South Africa. After his many years in captivity, he learns that people can be good and caring.
It's amazing to find out how Joao and other very special orphaned chimps become a new family. Though each one has been through horrible situations, they were rescued and now live out their lives at a caring and beautiful sanctuary.
Children and adults will learn more about chimpanzee behaviour. Written in the chimps voice, it's very easy to fall in love with these creatures!
