The Blue Topaz Ring is a juvenile fiction, historical romance/mystery novel with living
characters and a unique blend of intricate mystery and tender divided love.

The story takes place in the colorful background of Sabinetown, Texas, a frontier town located in Deep East Texas, no longer shown on
present Texas highway maps.

As I dug around in the basements of old courthouses and libraries in
East Texas towns, I happened to run across a very interesting, well-documented
historical incident: In the spring of 1865, near the end of the Civil War, the
Union Army was getting too close to Texas for comfort so the Confederates
stopped the advancing army at a place in Louisiana called Pleasant Hill, a few
hour's ride by horseback east of Sabinetown. A fierce
battle ensued. The dead and wounded from that battle were carted off to a
nearby town, Keatchie; both locations play a part in
the setting for this story.

The Blue Topaz Ring
tells the story about Lillie Sloan, a nurse from Texas who gets her first taste of battle caring
for the Pleasant
Hill
battle casualties. Lillie had a dislike for the Yankees, but all that changed
when she found herself caring for a severely wounded Union officer, Calvin
Foley. Hugh Gilchrist, a Confederate private, plans to ask his childhood love,
Lillie, for her hand in marriage as soon as the war is over; but, as Calvin and
Lillie's mutual attraction grows, she begins to question her feelings for Hugh.
Both men are young and handsome, and in love with Lillie. One of the two will
place a ring on her finger on her wedding day - but which one?
