Big Claus is rich, Little Claus is poor. Little Claus makes the mistake of proclaiming to the village that the horses he works are his. Big Claus gets angry, four of the five horses are his, and in his indignation, kills Little Claus' only horse. Dismayed, Little Claus heads to market with the horse hide, but instead cons a farmer out of a bag of money in an little affair involving the farmer's wife, the deacon, a wizard and the devil. When Big Claus sees Little Claus returning with his loot, his jealousy, and Little Claus' guile, leads to Big Claus killing his own horses, his humiliation in the market place as he tries to follow in Little Claus' footsteps, and the resulting attempt to put an axe through Little Claus' head. But instead of Little Claus it was his recently deceased Granny under the axe. The next day her deafness, an angry innkeeper, and a pint of mead turn Granny into another bundle of cash. Again Big Claus' jealousy takes over, and another little lie from Little Claus ends in the death of Big Claus' Granny, further humiliation in the market place, and Little Claus being bundled into a sack to be drowned...
