MoreTen year old Harold Spencer lives in the Wiltshire village of Plumley, in post-war austerity-hit Britain.
Although never with malice aforethought as our legal eagles say, Harold regularly brings confusion and chaos to the otherwise docile backwater of Plumley. No matter what he does, or says, if Happy Harold Spencer is around, something is bound to go wrong, and when it does, a queue of angry villagers form a queue at Harold's abode, waiting to demand immediate reparation for damage to mind, body and even soul, from the weary Mr Bernard Spencer.
Harold is aided in his doings mainly by his trusty 'lieutenants', the twins Tim and Larry Tucker, and on the odd occasion the only fairer member of his gang, the pale but pretty Betty Unsworth. At other times, the village drunk and layabout is also unwittingly dragged into one or more of Harold's schemes - Old Jim Meery.
There are seven Happy Harold Stories which make up this compendium, and each can be purchased separately on Kindle if one so wishes. The stories are :
Happy Harold and his Friends. - It is the start of the summer holidays, and an odd sequence of events involving a table-top battle re-enactment, a dead cat, apple scrumping and a new horse for the milkman, results in Harold becoming a sporting hero, but not for long.
Happy Harold and the Great Give-Away. - After a misunderstanding in his History lesson in school, Harold manages to provide every child in the village with a sandpit, and manages to bring about a last-minute change to the usual route for an amateur car rally.
Happy Harold and the Marsh Lizards. - A ruined fishing trip, the dreaded Glee Club, sympathy for the local farm labourers, and the honouring of a mythical Saint bring fireworks to the village of Plumley - literally.
Happy Harold goes on the Wagon. - After convincing herself that young Harold has been led astray by his irresponsible parents, stoic patron of the local temperance society, Miss Constance Major, asks Harold would he like to go on the wagon - as Harold has always wanted to do just that, he readily agrees. . .
Happy Harold and the Cold Ghost. - Harold is a true hero in this offering, as he comes to the aid of a poorly classmate. But it cannot last; next morning a beaming Mr Bellard - Harold's teacher, asks Harold to read the story he has written for homework to the whole class. Before he has even finished reading, his classmates look - and listen - and are stunned.
Happy Harold and the Atomic Apple.- A mad professor, top-secret 'citro-atomic' technology, a world famous pop star and a brand new variety of apple - the Cumbrian Galaxy - come together in the most cosmic of circumstances, and rather unusually knock Harold off centre-stage for once; the main character in this tale is another young lad, but one who lives not only 400 miles away, but fifty or so years in the future.
Happy Harold goes on Holiday. - Harold goes on holiday with his parents to Whitmore's, a holiday camp on the edge of the resort town of Rhyl on the North Wales coast. Unfortunately, Harold forgets to take a holiday from himself and brings just the same chaos to holidaymakers and locals alike as he does every other week back home. As well as the hundreds of holidaymakers packing the camp out, there is also a gang of villains led by a criminal mastermind; the plan is to bring ruin to the owner of the camp - old Toby Whitmore - unbeknown to the gang, they decide to put their plan into action during the very same week of Harold's stay, so not such a criminal mastermind after all. . .
