In Lyin' Like a Dog, Richard Mason offers a fictional portrayal of a child's life in the rural South during World War II.

When 12-year-old Richard Mason's birthday arrives on Sept. 23, 1945, and no one presents him with a gift, he is frustrated but not surprised. Living in the tiny village of Norphlet, Ark., the Mason family never had extra money to spend on anything that couldn't be eaten or worn. In fact, Richard believes he's lucky to even be alive to see his 12th year. Lounging in a hayloft, the carefree youngster recalls recent adventures, including his escape from a suspicious stranger in Flat Creek Swamp, collecting "funny books" to trade for a misprinted copy he believes to be worth a fortune, and dumping food coloring into the baptistery just before the class bully is baptized.

"I want future generations to understand what it was like growing up in the South around World War II without modern conveniences," Mason says. "It is a story of relationships, courage and resilience in small-town America."

Intended to entertain and inspire, the book is based on the author's own experiences growing up in rural Arkansas. Mason's narrative is told from the perspective of a child and offers an authentic glimpse into an era that has vanished from the American landscape.
