Condition: Dust Jacket is fairly good, with wear to the left side top and bottom corners. there is a 3 inch tear at the top left, some minor loss and scuffing to the back of the dust jacket. This is the $2.95 jacket, although it has been price clipped. It measures 9 3/4 X 12.
The hardcover book has red cloth binding covering the spine, plus 3/4" on front and back cover, with the rest in black, writing in white, and a pictorial of a red hat with a white feather that decorates both front and back covers. The DJ has protected the book well and the black both front and back are clean, just slight edge chipping. Inside boards front and back have age spots. Inside pages are very clean with no writing at all.
Opening board with small red hats that progress across, increasing in size. The same on the back board small then increasing in size on the inside 1st page.
Pages are clean, no writing, none are torn, creased or missing. The spine is tight, a well- preserved book for its age.
This is an early edition. The only date is the copyright date of 1938. It is not a first, as it does not have the $1.00 Mulberry Street price on the dust jacket. The dust jacket has a number of comments on the back by The Atlantic Monthly, National Parent-Teacher Magazine, The New Yorker, The Horn Book Magazine and the New York Times about his first book, And To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. .
The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins was Dr. Seuss' second book, and he has created a true classic with his lively imagination, and his pen drawings, which have added humor and beauty to this wonderful book.
