From the author: In summer 1994, University of Georgia faculty member Sally Hudson-Ross, 25 high school mentor teachers in six nearby schools, and I joined to redesign a yearlong teacher education program in secondary English language arts. (See Graham, Hudson-Ross, & McWhorter, 1997, for a detailed description of the project's genesis and development.) The core group of mentor teachers has remained largely intact. Sally and I annually team teach all the campus courses for two quarters and then follow teacher candidates into their full-time student teaching in the spring quarter. Together with the mentor teachers, we introduce 20 to 25 preservice teachers to the complexities of a teaching life. Each summer, we continue to refine the teacher education program we developed collaboratively in 1994. We seek to become a self-sustaining, professional development faculty in secondary English, a group we call the University of Georgia Network of English Teachers and Students (UGA,NETS).
