We accompanied them as far as the old appletree, and sat down to examine a common Blue Gentian, while they explored the marsh. Soon Jimmy called out that he had found something pretty, but not Uncle John's specimen. After wading around in the tall, lush grass awhile, both Ned and Jimmy said they would have to give it up; for there was no pink flower there with a bright yellow star in the centre; and JSed said Uncle John was silly to suppose the same flowers could be found now in the very same places where they grew when Adam was a boy. Upon which every girl of us retorted sharply, and Kittie told him, if he should live to be as old as Adam himself, his head would be no better than a calf's head beside Uncle John's. This was all in play, however; for we knew well enough.Ned only wished to stir us up, and that if Uncle John had needed a champion, he would have been the very first to combat in his cause. While the rest of us were thus wasting words, Charley, with a perseverance which has since led to greater discoveries than a flower, continued his search amid the Burr-reeds and Cat-tails, some of them higher than his head.
