Prince Siegfried, the brave and wealthy son of the King of the Franks, was riding with his hundred knights to win the hand of the lovely Burgundian princess Kremhild. Siegfried's good fortune and Kremhild's beauty soon earned the fierce envy and hatred of Brunhild, the wife of Kremhild's brother, King Gunther, a; of Hagen, Gunther's chief councillo Together Brunhild and Hagen plotted Siegfried's death and the theft of his great treasure. It was only after some time that Kremhild discovered their treachery, and then the vengeance she wreaked brought tragic destruction on many, including herself. In this book E. M. Almedingen retells one of the greatest of the German heroic epics, The Nibelungenlied. The original epic was written by an unknown author, probably at the beginning of the thirteenth century. It was immensely popular throughout the Middle Ages, and since then it has inspired many works of literature.
