Within the expansive Indonesian archipelago and east of Bali lies the rugged island of Lombok. Located at the edge of the Asian continental shelf, Lombok marks the geological shift from western to eastern Indonesia - a transitional area where Asian species intermingle with Australian ones. The island is home to Indonesia's tallest mountain, Mount Rinjani, and characterised by rolling hills and precipitous cliffs along its coasts.

Lombok's varied history offers an urban setting consisting of Dutch colonial architecture alongside colourful indigenous Sasak and Balinese influences. Recently tainted by bouts of rioting, Lombok is now recapturing its previous charm. The traveller can wander along busy city streets and lively ports, visit indigenous crafts centres, and, for a quieter trail, hike through terraced rice fields to Mount Rinjani, or simply stroll along Lombok's dazzling beaches. Pristine and maintaining its own calming allure, Lombok is a refreshing alternative for visitors to the region.
