Heidi is twelve; her parents have separated, and she lives with her mother in Switzerland. It's holiday time and Heidi's mother is involved in a new romance so she decides Heidi should spend time with her father, who now lives on a game reserve in Africa. Heidi's mother may not have been so keen on the idea had she realised what was in store for Heidi. For within a few days of arriving in Kenya, Heidi makes herself completely at home in her new surroundings, befriends a wild elephant and a young Kenyan boy from the Waliangulu tribe, and then sets off on a dangerous journey that will have a significant effect on the whole family. Set in Switzerland and the vast plains of east Africa, Heidi and The Elephant is an exciting adventure story with a real adventure. Alan Birkinshaw was born in Auckland, New Zealand and now lives in London. His work as an award winning film and television director has taken him all over the world, and working with elephants on his movie, Ten Little Indians, set in Africa, gave him the idea for Heidi and The Elephant. Heidi and The Elephant is Alan Birkinshaw's first novel.
