Starting with a short introduction to the period, the author describes the experience of childhood within the historical and social context. The author explains how a child's situation, whether rich or poor, from the country or the city, affected their food, clothes, education, games and toys. There are also chapters on child labour and the workhouse. Anne Steel is an experienced junior and middle school teacher. She holds an Honours Degree in History from Reading University, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from Southampton University. She has written many young history books for Wayland.
