Fifteen-year-old Wynter Moorehawke, daughter of Protector Lord Lorcan Moorehawke, returns to her homeland after five years in the bleak North. All has changed. King Jonathon´s civilized realm has become a place of intrigue, dark torture chambers and violent ghosts, and all resistance to the King is brutally suppressed. Wynter's good friend, the Crown Prince Alberon is missing, and there are murmurings of a `Bloody Machine´ of untold destructive power.
