MoreMy Mama's War is based on the Civil War memoirs of Eugenia Yates Levy Phillips, wife of Congressman Philip Phillips. It is told in the first person, from the viewpoint of Eugenia's 10-year-old daughter. Eugenia was taken as a political prisoner of war in Washington, along with her daughter, who is telling the story. Under pressure from abroad, Eugenia was released to the Confederacy, where she was incarcerated a second time and charged under the infamous Women's Order. She was imprisoned on Ship Island, known as Devil's Island of the North. Released once again after international protest, the family went to Mobile, Alabama, and on to La Grange, Georgia. There they lived surrounded by friends and prominent figures of the Confederacy, until the town was attacked by Yankees. The scenes in My Mama's War are historically accurate and are drawn from events Eugenia's daughter would have witnessed. An elementary educator in Atlanta, author Josef Nix believes that Eugenia's story needs to be told. A Southerner, Nix wanted to teach his children their heritage, but found that "trying to find unbiased reading on the subject of Jewish history in the South, strong women and the Civil War for them proved difficult. The story of Eugenia Yates Levy Phillips, which I was taught as a child, filled those needs." As the Civil War's 150th anniversary approaches, Nix felt the time was right to publish Eugenia's story.
