However, when the dog is caught in the human's trap, the three leave their cave to live with the human's family. Having been forewarned, the dog makes the human write a contract, promising that he will take care of the dog when he is old and can no longer herd the human's sheep. The dog entrusts the contract to the cat, who entrusts it to the mouse, and here is where the trouble starts. A tragicomic tale, Why the Dog Chases the Cat and the Cat Chases the Mouse, explains the age-old antipathy among the species, and reminds us of all that is lost when promises are broken.
