MoreThis children's fiction story takes place in an actual section of the Na 'Aina Kai Botanical Gardens, Island of Kauai, Hawaii. Garden founders Joyce and Ed Doty retired to Kauai from their ranch in Northern California in 1982. What was begun as a landscape project in their front yard has, over this 24 year period, grown to 240 acres that have been developed into 12 diverse garden areas, complete with one of the largest collections of bronze sculpture in the United States. In 1999 the Doty's created a Not-For-Profit Foundation, to which they donate the entire gardens. At that time, Na 'Aina Kai was opened to the public for tours and events. The Foundation's mission supports and promotes tropical horticulture, agriculture and forestry, in addition to a constantly evolving garden and art experience for Kauai's residents and visitors. Na 'Aina Kai gardens include a hedge maze, a waterfall, a koi-filled lagoon, a forest of 60,000 hardwood trees, miles of trails, and a beautiful and secluded white sand beach. The hardwood plantation was established as an educational experiment for tropical forestry interests, and will sustain the future of the gardens financially at harvest. Na 'Aina Kai's most recent project is the miniature ahupua'a, a pie-slice-shaped land division from the mountains to the ocean. A mountain waterfall forms a stream that flows downhill past huts, taro loi, sweet potato fields and other plantings into the fish-filled ocean. Bronze inhabitants involved in traditional daily activities including kapa-making, planting and hunting complete this early Hawaiian village. Na 'Aina Kai's "Under the Rainbow" Children's Garden opened in 2005. It features a 16-foot-tall bronze sculpture/fountain depicting Jack and the Beanstalk, complete with the beautiful mosaic tiled story-in-picture foundation surrounding the sculpture. This mosaic and a tropical scene mosaic graffiti wall are the works of talented artist Alex Gupton. Many surprises are in store for families who tour the Chidren's Garden - a Gecko Maze, the Rubbertree Treehouse, a tropical jungle and mountain with bridges, tunnels and slides, a railroad train, log cabins and a covered wagon made from our own teak lumber - all among kid-friendly plantings. The Children's Garden is a happy and educational environment for family tours and birthday parties.
