THE BREITHAUPT BROTHERS IN THE CIVIL WAR is the third volume in a multi-volume series of historical-genealogical studies concerning The Breithaupt Family originating in Germany in the 14th century. The American Civil War is the venue as Private Lewis A. Breithaupt was sent to Minnesota to help settle the Indian Uprising before being sent to fight in the southern war against the Confederacy. His near death in northern Minnesota casts a pall over his health throughout the southern war - sweltering in the swamps of the Yazoo Valley, fighting in the Siege of Atlanta, participating in the infamous March To The Sea, marching eastward in the Carolinas Campaign, he was finally mustered out in Washington, D.C. in 1865, returning home to Wisconsin and a life of postwar disease and disability. It is also the story of his brothers who fought in the eastern front of the Civil War, were wounded, and who lived the balance of their young lives in the disability and disease of war into their old age. These stories contain the narrative of the Civil War records concerning their service and disabilities garnered during the War of the Rebellion.
