FDR was a President like no other-the only one who led the nation from a wheelchair, the only one to be elected to four terms, the privileged child of wealth who inspired people who sold apples on the street corner to buy bread for their families! Roosevelt successfully hid the full extent of his disability from most Americans, and the polio that struck him down couldn't keep him down. For three full terms and a partial fourth term as President of the United States, he poured out his considerable energy and charm to heal the nation. Students will learn about his polio and the vaccine that Jonas Salk later found to prevent the disease, three decades too late to help FDR, but in time to keep millions of children from suffering his fate. They'll learn about the programs and agencies Roosevelt created during his presidency to help America recover from the Great Depression.

Students will be interested to learn that the memorial to this great President took over 50 years to be completed!

Creative activities involve students in this study: brainstorming solutions to the problems of the Great Depression, puzzles, charts, current events and review questions. An answer key is provided. Also included are a time line of World War II, internet research ideas and multiple intelligence activities.
