Adventures, new experiences, and learning about his new surroundings replace TV, video games, and other artificial stimuli. To his own surprise he is perfectly well entertained by the stimuli nature offers. His fear and dependence are replaced by new-found self-confidence and self-reliance, and he reluctantly leaves when his vacation ends. Children of various ages will find special appeal in various ways. For the young, it is simply an entertaining story about a boy spending the summer with his grandmother and of the experiences and adventures he has during that time. It communicates to older children how first impressions can be deceptive and the importance of looking at situations, people, and nature from different viewpoints.
