The first 0/ them were drawn from Austraha and the Islands of the Southern Pacific, where I had fizled and roamed in the nuddle and late Eighties. I did not thz'nk then, and I do 1l0t think now, that tlds was perilous to tlleir truthfulness. After many years of tra1.Jel and home-staying ouservatz"on I have found that all worth remembrance, the saHent things and scenes, emerge clearly out of I1ryriad impressions, and become permanent in mind and memory. Things so emerging are t;'Pical at least, and probably true. Those tales of the Far South were given out with some prodigaHty.
