A Word About The Author and Her Works
"Among us, we hear the purest, most beautiful voice of wisdom, that has as Ideal to make Man better. What is the secret that Domnita Georgesco-Moldoveanu hides in her writing to awaken enchantment and this admiration that becomes influence and even imposture? Is it the deep philosophical meaning? The noble message? The magic of her poetic writing? The dynamism? The endless inventiveness? The lively freshness of the characters? Or maybe the ascending aspiration towards perfection, light, the absolute? The conscience is the fundamental axis of Domnita"s writings. And that corresponds to the ideal which is implied and even often asserted in her works: to raise a new Man for the harmony of the human universe, to make this Man better. This is actually the ideal that the author herself aimed for all her life." Liliana M.
Domnita Georgesco-Moldoveanu was born in Romania, within a large family of intellectuals who fostered her creativity. When she was three years old, she was inventing games; when she was four, she created her first tale and when she was six - her first poem! Ever since she has not stopped imagining tales and it was in the first years of school when she really started to write. At fifteen, Domnita published her first short story. She studied literature at the Faculty of Literature within the University of Bucharest. She was an assistant at the Faculty of Esthetics within the Academy of Music in Bucharest, and part-time lecturer of Romanian literature at the Faculty of Cinematography in Bucharest. In 1972 she became a member of the Union of the Writers of Romania. The same year, she settled in France. Since then she has been writing only in French (two novels, short stories, thoughts\maxims, notes, a diary, a novel in the shape of diary, scenarios for animated drawing).
Books published in French:
Golden Heart - novel; first edition in 1987; 275 pages; withdrawn from the market by the author because of typographical errors. Translation: "The novel convinces the reader that, through sacrifice, one can reach beauty and make Man better... All this is an emotional crescendo of torment and deep wisdom, poetry and charm." Louis Kaiser, Paris, 1973
Mother (Good-bye dreams?) - novel; ready for publishing; 355 pages Narrates the ravaged life of a tormented woman - the author"s mother - who will dream, hope and love thanks to the great values of humanity and the musical environment that surround her. Narrated in the first person, the subject of this novel is set in Romania, making us live the occupation during World War I, as well as the financial crisis of 1930. This novel, like Golden Heart, is a musical quintessence of beauty and noble thoughts.
2006 - Short Stories: The old peasants told me - in press, 123 pages "The short stories of the volume are set in the Romanian countryside, in the vaster neighbourhoods of the First World War. Exposing moral qualities of the teenagers and young Rumanian peasants of the countryside, these short stories emphasize universal qualities of youth: purity of the heart, kindness, and courage and stoicism that reach sacrifice. The stories are presented as tales narrated by the old people of a village, carrying a complex dramatism that oscillates between tragedy and humour, while being able to reach a heroic climax, sometimes an ironic one. Each short story presents another aspect of life, sometimes shattering, though dressed in simplicity. It is a real offering with deep resonance of sob and laughter; a musical and at the same time pictorial portrait of a corner of the world. It is the breath of the human soul"s force, destined to make Man better, to achieve harmony within his society." Liliana M.
Books translated into English:
2006 - Little Cricky -an epic story in verse with beautiful illustrations on 36 pages. Wishing to offer a smile to English-speaking children as well, the author made it possible that Little Cricket be translated in English as well. Liliana Mihai and Miruna Nistor translated this beautiful epic poem, succeeding to render into English its musical verse with fidelity and charm. "In short, fine verse, Cricky"s story is an enchantment via which the author also succeeds to pass onto the reader a message about friendship and social harmony throughout all childhood stages. With refinement and humour, the author makes of the little character a greatly candid person to whom everyone becomes attached easily. In spite of his initial vanity, this small hero becomes the readers" friend along his extraordinary adventures. Moreover, the exceptional qualities of this work are emphasized through its poetical musicality and charming style. And the vocabulary is so natural and in the same time rich, fitted to childhood"s fun! Even at the fresh age of two or three, most of the children are capable to follow till the end the story in verse that flows on the 36 pages of the book." Louis Kaiser, Paris, 1973
To give children both enjoyment and a sound knowledge of nature, the author asked for guidance from the Dean of the Faculty of Entomology in Bucharest, who explained to her that all insects are useful, but at the same time dangerous. The author became convinced about the utility of insects only when she realized that their complete extermination forced singing birds to desert the trees in the large towns.
Books published in Romanian:
1955 - Floriette"s Well - prose, 77 pages (short stories for children aged 9 to 13). First great success, sold out as soon as it appeared on the market; nine short stories: dramas, sometimes impregnated of humour, in which children are real heros.
1956 - Little Cricket - a best-seller, an epic story in verse with beautiful illustrations on 32 pages; six editions (1956, 1959, 1965, 1967, 1970, 1997), each with 30 000 copies on the market. The Leipzig International Book Fair ordered its translation in German after the first edition. The book speaks about the adventures of a little cricket and his violin who, out of pride, refused the invitation of the "little buggies" to shelter with them as winter is coming, thus finding himself alone in confronting the big winds that steal his only property - his violin. In the end, it is the little buggies that he despised in the beginning that help him find his violin. This book by D.Georgesco-Moldoveanu was praised in the international magazine "Romanian Books", 1979 (3), as being a best-seller of children literature: "The Little Cicade (Cricket) has known five editions since its first imprint. It is the graceful and fanciful story of a little cicade, a brave and famous fiddler, quite different from the character we know from the fable, a little hero who is sure to be much liked by the young ones."
1961 - Four Children in the Big Forest - prose, 216 pages. This book attracted not only children, but also adults and horse lovers. Adventures novel published in Romanian, then translated into Bulgarian; sold out in a month when first appeared on the market. From a stable of racing horses, thieves steal a group of thoroughbred horses and run away in a nearby forest. Along numerous adventures, four children will prove initiative, as well as courage and humanity, ending victoriously their adventures when succeeding to bring back to the stable all horses, sound and safe.
1973 - Stars on a Lyre (Songs for an Empty Crib) - poems; 125 pages; foreword of the second edition (1997) signed by El. Folea, professor of Romanian literature in Bucharest: Translation: "The poetic creation of the author is a major walk in the evolution of contemporary Romanian poetry: her poems and her style will mark the poetry from the 8th decade of the last century (1970-1980) until nowadays... Domnita"s art is light, beauty and perfection. Using the antithesis shade-light expressed in fantastic images of time relativity and abyssal distances, the poet-genius of these poems becomes herself a demiurge... As in all great poetry, Domnita Georgesco-Moldveanu has the gift of unique metaphors, complex pictorial images, at the same time musical... She attains the interior dynamics of vocabulary by re-actualizing old words, and also by creating new ones." First edition appeared 1973, with the preliminary publication of several of its poems.
2001 - Tales of stars ("Once Upon a Time There Would Be... ") - 274 pages; contract withdrawn by the author in 1959 and replaced with the adventures novel Four Children In The Big Forest, published in 1961. Quotation on the back of this collection of tales published in 2001: Translated from Romanian: "Real poems in prose, so enchanting and impregnated of philosophy, ethics and esthetics, and an overflowing creativity. These tales are addressed to a large audience: children, teenagers, adults... Charming imagination, surprising authenticity of characters, nobility of the message, heroic aspirations, humour, intelligence, wisdom, humanism... These tales will lead parents, teachers and professors to meditate" Ana-Maria Sireteanu, Director of the Cultural Broadcast, Radio Bucharest, Romania. Previously translated from French: "The author, having a great talent of storyteller, uncovers the universal human problems... Using symbolic visions, the author knows how to make us see through a deep wisdom punctuated with aphorisms and popular proverbs". Louis Kaiser, Paris, 1973
