Nestled near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in the little town of Parker, Colorado, a stone's throw from Denver, lived a handsome gray and white Miniature Schnauzer named Charlie. In the same town lived a vile and evil judge named Oscar Hunter. Charlie didn't know the judge and the judge had never heard of Charlie. But their paths were fated to cross, and when they did, Charlie's life was changed forever-and so was the judge's. And so begins the adventures of Charlie Smart, whose bark is taken by order of the court, but whose secret human voice is gifted by a powerful Voodoo Priestess when he accidentally saves her from master criminal Rupert Rottendorf. While Charlie doesn't consider himself the bravest dog in the world, he does manage to use his new voice to foil international smugglers, stop a bank robbery, rescue two men from a burning building, and even save a world leader or two-all in the pursuit of...cheese. Charlie's success (and his gift for hamming it up) lands him in the international spotlight-and right back into the clutches of Rupert Rottendorf. But this time it is Charlie's guardian Sam, Rupert is after. Although Charlie's celebrity has brought with it troubling questions, when Sam goes missing he quickly learns the true meaning of courage.

The Secret Life of Charlie Smart is based on a real Miniature Schnauzer who had been mistreated and debarked. The love emanating from Charlie, along with the shrewd and humorous antics he developed as substitutes for his inability to bark, enabled him to take over the household. Charlie served as the inspiration for this series of adventure stories for children.

A great review - "Charlie Smart is a great book! It teaches you a very important lesson - just because you can't do something, it doesn't mean you are a failure.
