The story is about a small Bear named Rodger whose parents have an only child; they are over protective of him. A fox named Willy comes under a fence and approaches Rodger and asks "why are you so sad". He answers the fox that he is lonely, and the only contact he has is with the old owl, he is not able to see anything other than the forest and that the food is so boring. Willy says "I can help you with that, come along with me". Rodger goes with Willy to see the world. After a long walk, Willy shows Rodger a town from a high on a hill. Rodger is amazed at what he sees. Rodger is now hungry and tired, the Fox takes him to a bush full of berries. After Rodger is finished eating, Rodger is now tired, the Fox finds a tree with a hole large enough for Rodger to climb in, and go to sleep. Throughout the night hunters come, Willy gets up and runs away leaving Rodger all alone. The next morning Rodger wakes up, looks around and calls for Willy with no answer; Rodger feels abandoned. Mr. Smart (the owl) finds Rodger and brings him home. Rodger starts school and for the first time in his life he is with children. Rodger and Courtney are in the same class and become friends. Later Rodger comes across a bull-dozer making roads near their home. Realizing civilization is closing in on their home they reason they must move. The distance to Courtney's home is too far for Rodger to have a relationship with Courtney. This compels Rodger to ask Courtney to marry him. They build a home equal distance to their parents and start a life of their own.
